Role Responsibilities
The Ministry of Jobs Economy, Trade and Immigration is looking for one (1) OHS Technical Advisor.
As a key member of our multi-disciplinary Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Team, the Technical Advisor provides senior-level expertise and guidance on the interpretation and application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Code. The Technical Advisor has excellent knowledge of the hazards, legislative requirements, typical control measures and best practices for various industries. In this advisory role, you will support OHS Officers and Lead Investigators by offering technical direction, ensuring consistent regulatory compliance, and strengthening field-level practices.
Reporting to the Manager, Special Investigations Unit the Technical Advisor will lead or participate in provincial teams to provide technical expertise in support of branch project priorities.
Responsibilities Include:
- Take a lead role in conducting complex work site inspections and investigations requiring advanced skill and technical knowledge in the recognition of hazards, evaluation of these in relation to minimum required standards in the OHS Act, regulations and code, and the controls of these health and safety hazards.
- Promotes staff development and transfer of knowledge by cross training, coaching and guiding the activities of OHS Officers.
- Coach OHS Officers in the accurate identification of the industry specific health and safety violation relative to the OHS Act, Regulation and Code, documentation of observations in the field and methods of obtaining compliance to minimum health and safety regulated standards.
- Build productive and positive working relations with business industry and employee groups to aid in achieving compliance to all minimum legislated OHS standards and to promote best health and safety practices.
- Engage external clients to promote understanding, accountability, and compliance with OHS requirements.
In addition, the Technical Advisor will contribute to the development of Operational Procedures and investigator resources and provide feedback on industry practices, emerging concerns, and field-related issues impacting officer activities. The role may also involve liaising with policy and legislative units, Crown Prosecutors, as well as other internal branches, to support continuous improvement of field practices.
This role will also support a team of Investigations Specialists who provide Next of Kin supports through complex engagements, discussing process and outcomes. Additionally supports will be provided for prosecutions including creative sentencing and enhanced regulatory supervision outcomes.

Qualifications
University graduation in OHS, Industrial hygiene, engineering, Applied Science, or in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Depending on the discipline:
- Journeyperson level certification and 6 years related experience at the Journeyperson level
- Alberta Occupational Certificate and 9 years related experience
- Related diploma and 6 years related experience.
