The Alberta Public Service works to build a stronger province for current and future generations. We make a difference in the lives of Albertans through rewarding and diverse career opportunities.
Technology and Innovation is responsible for making innovation and technology the driving force behind Alberta’s economic growth and diversification.
Within DDD, the Software Delivery Branch supports and enables product and platform teams by providing access to the underlying runtime and infrastructure -- cloud services, common tooling and patterns, and architecture capability -- and leads the evolution of the technology practice around digital service delivery, including modern platform operations and the delivery of AI-enabled services.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, CloudOps, this position leads the Runtime & Platform Operations team, which operates the application runtime the division deploys onto: the OpenShift platform on-premises and in Azure (Azure Red Hat OpenShift), the supporting cloud infrastructure, and the golden path from container to production, with identity, logging, audit, and security gates wired in.
The position also enables AI workloads on the runtime - ensuring the platform is suitable for data-intensive and model-serving workloads, operating a local/private-model gateway, and routing workloads to the appropriate hosting tenancy by classification.
The responsibilities of this role include:
- Leading enterprise OpenShift platform operations across cloud and on-premises environments, ensuring secure, scalable, and highly available runtime services.
- Driving platform modernization by consolidating application hosting onto OpenShift and establishing standardized deployment and operational practices.
- Overseeing end-to-end container-to-production delivery pipelines, integrating CI/CD, security controls, observability, and governance requirements.
- Providing strategic cloud advisory services and enabling delivery teams to adopt cloud solutions, architecture patterns, and operational best practices.
- Evaluating cloud service requirements, contracts, and technology options while delivering recommendations that support business and operational objectives.
- Leading and developing multidisciplinary technical teams through coaching, performance management, workforce planning, and continuous professional development.
- Managing operational planning, budgets, contracts, and branch reporting while advising senior leadership on platform strategy, emerging risks, and service improvements.
To be successful in this position, you will demonstrate:
- Ability to build and maintain effective networks and collaborative environments; strong judgment, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills; ability to work within technology, policy, regulatory, financial, legal, ethical, and user constraints.
- Ability to adjust resources and shift priorities as demands or directions change, and to work with groups to manage change and negotiate solutions.

Preference will be given to candidate who have experience with:
- Leading technical teams and delivering projects, including roadmap and operational planning, resource allocation, priority management, and staff performance management.
- Major cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure, AWS) and monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) to support platform health, incident detection, and resolution.
- Operating container platforms in production environments, whether managed or self-hosted (e.g., EKS, AKS, GKE, OpenShift, ECS, or upstream Kubernetes).
- Applying generative AI tools to enhance individual and team productivity, with sound judgment in evaluating outputs and determining appropriate use cases.
Equivalencies:
- A related master’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience; or
- A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; or

- A minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.
The following experience will be considered assets:
- Operating Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift as a shared platform for delivery teams, including multi-tenancy, RBAC, and self-service capabilities, with experience in Azure Red Hat OpenShift considered an asset beyond solely deploying workloads to a cluster.
- Managing cloud operations on major cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP), including cost management, capacity planning, governance, and cloud security practices such as identity and access management, encryption, and compliance.
- Using infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible to automate cloud provisioning, configuration, and management.
- Supporting AI-enabled or data-intensive workloads in production environments, including deployment, monitoring, scaling, and the use of agentic tooling for operational automation and troubleshooting.
