This role ensures compliance with key legislation, including the Financial Administration Act, Sustainable Fiscal Planning and Reporting Act, and Public Sector Accounting Standards, while leading the delivery of accurate, timely financial reporting and enhancing internal control frameworks.
Role Responsibilities
The Director provides leadership to a team of financial professionals and partners with senior stakeholders across government to support decision-making, drive transformation initiatives (including 1GX), and enhance financial accountability across the Ministry. Operating within a complex, high-accountability environment, this role requires sound judgment, diplomacy, and the ability to manage competing priorities. The Director engages regularly with senior executives, central agencies, and external auditors on sensitive financial matters.
Your responsibilities will include:
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Lead the preparation and review of consolidate ministry financial statements and management reporting
- Provide expert advice on financial policy, controls, and reporting compliance
- Ensure alignment with Treasury Board and Finance (TBF) Directives and policy, and public sector accounting standard requirements.
Audit and Accountability
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) and Corporate Internal Audit Services (CIAS)
- Coordinate audit activities, monitor findings, and ensure timely implementation of recommendations
- Provide updates to executive team on audit findings.
Financial Controls and Risk Management
- Oversee internal control frameworks and financial processes
- Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Ensure integrity, accuracy, completeness and reliability of financial systems and data.

- Provide oversight of financial systems, security access, and reporting tools (including 1GX)
- Champion system improvements and financial reporting enhancements
- Ensure effective financial operations in accordance with government legislation.

- Identify priorities, assess impacts, and manage implementation

Qualifications
- University degree in a related field such as Accounting, Public administration, Public Policy or Finance supplemented by 7 years of related experience.
Required
- Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
- 3-5 years of progressive senior financial management experience (public sector experience preferred
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
- Strong financial, business, and political acumen
- Extensive knowledge of financial management, consolidation reporting, and audit practices
- Experience providing strategic advice to executive leadership
- Knowledge of Government of Alberta legislation and policies
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Experience with large-scale transformation initiatives (e.g., 1GX)
