The Digital Design and Delivery (DDD) division leads the design and delivery of next‑generation digital public services for the Government of Alberta. Using modern, user‑centred, agile approaches, DDD partners with ministries to deliver services that are simpler, faster, and more impactful for Albertans.

 

Within DDD, the Software Delivery Branch provides architectural leadership, CloudOps, DevOps/QA practices, quality engineering, and software delivery excellence across product and platform teams. This Digital Architect role is a visionary and technical leader responsible for shaping the strategic design and overseeing the implementation of our organization's digital ecosystem. The position Leads the design and evolution of AI‑enabled, human‑centered digital solutions for the Government of Alberta. Ensures solutions are scalable, secure, API‑first, and aligned with GoA’s AI‑First delivery strategy and citizen outcome.

Role Responsibilities

The Software Delivery Branch is looking for three (3) Digital Architects. These positions will report directly to the Director of Architecture. 

 

These roles are ideal for experienced System Analysts or emerging Architects who are ready to grow their architectural leadership capabilities. You will help teams modernize platforms, reduce technical debt, and responsibly integrate emerging technologies, including AI, while learning and evolving alongside a strong architecture community of practice

 

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Lead AI first, human centered architecture, guiding end to end solution design from concept through implementation.
  • Define and implement API first, secure, scalable architectures integrating AI/ML, automation, and agentic workflows.
  • Provide architectural vision and standards, ensuring high quality solutions aligned to GoA strategy, enterprise frameworks, and responsible AI.
  • Evaluate and select technologies, platforms, and vendors, prioritizing AI enabled, open, and sustainable solutions.
  • Drive modernization and technical debt reduction, transitioning legacy systems to cloud native, containerized, AI ready architectures.
  • Engage stakeholders to align business outcomes, user needs, and technical feasibility, embedding human centered design.
  • Provide senior technical leadership and mentorship, building architecture and AI capability across product teams and communities of practice.
  • Oversee AI enabled solutions and automation initiatives, ensuring value delivery, governance, compliance (security, privacy, IP), and architectural coherence.

 

To be successful in this position, you will demonstrate:

  • Ability to design and guide AI first, API first architectures across complex environments, considering end to end impacts, interoperability, scalability, and citizen outcomes.
  • Expertise in evaluating emerging technologies (including AI/ML) and applying innovative, practical solutions to modernize legacy systems and reduce technical debt.
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality, secure, and scalable digital solutions, while enforcing standards, managing risk, and ensuring measurable business value.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to align business, product, UX, and technical teams to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Demonstrated leadership in mentoring teams, building architecture and AI capability, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ability to lead in complex, evolving environments, adapting to new technologies, AI advancements, and shifting priorities while maintaining delivery momentum.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A university degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering), supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible, related experience.
  • Proven experience in software development, systems analysis, solution design, or technical leadership roles, with demonstrated progression toward architectural responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering large scale digital platforms incorporating AI/ML capabilities (e.g., automation, predictive analytics, generative AI).
  • Proven experience delivering digital services using agile, product-oriented approaches with API first and human centered outcomes.
  • Expertise in API first architecture, microservices, OpenAPI (YAML), and integration patterns.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), including AI/ML services and security/compliance considerations.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong knowledge of security, privacy, IT governance, and responsible AI principles.
  • Proficiency in modern development languages and frameworks (e.g., .NET/C#, Node.js/TypeScript, React).
  • Demonstrated ability to use generative AI and agentic tools for analysis, design, and automation, including prompt design and evaluation of AI outputs.
  • Working knowledge of process automation patterns, including workflows, digital forms, and agentic orchestration.
  • A cover letter clearly demonstrating relevant skills and competencies tailored to this position.

 

Equivalencies:

  • A related master’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience; or
  • A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; or
  • A related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience.

 

Assets:

  • Experience contributing to or leading open source initiatives.
  • Experience building AI augmented development practices and reusable automation routines.
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems, into cloud, containerized architectures.
  • Experience in public sector or highly regulated environments.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., TOGAF, Cloud Solutions Architect).
  • Training or certification in AI/ML or responsible/ethical AI.
