Role Responsibilities

As the Park Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a key role in ensuring Alberta Parks facilities, grounds, infrastructure, equipment and vehicles are maintained to a high standard to support safe, enjoyable and quality visitor experiences. You will oversee park maintenance operations at a large or complex site, or across several smaller sites, while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with applicable policies, standards and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

In this hands-on supervisory role, you will lead and support maintenance staff by providing orientation and training, assigning and prioritizing daily work, coordinating schedules, monitoring work quality and providing ongoing coaching and performance support. You will also participate directly in park maintenance activities and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance of facilities, vehicles, tools and equipment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising and providing day-to-day direction to maintenance staff, including training, work assignments, scheduling, performance monitoring and workplace safety.
  • Coordinating and performing park maintenance activities such as landscaping, grass cutting, garbage collection, janitorial work, painting, snow clearing and equipment operation.
  • Conducting facility inspections, identifying maintenance deficiencies and hazards, implementing preventative maintenance programs and coordinating required repairs.
  • Operating and overseeing the safe use and maintenance of light and heavy-duty equipment, vehicles and tools, based on required qualifications.
  • Supporting the safe operation and maintenance of park water and wastewater systems, where applicable, including water sampling, basic testing and coordination of repairs and wastewater removal.
  • Coordinating contractors and monitoring service contracts to ensure services meet contractual requirements and addressing or escalating non-compliance as appropriate.
  • Supporting purchasing and procurement activities, including identifying operational requirements, purchasing authorized materials and supplies, processing invoices and reconciling departmental purchasing-card transactions.
  • Contributing site-level knowledge to facility lifecycle maintenance, repair, replacement and capital projects, including providing input on visitor needs and operational priorities.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture by ensuring staff receive appropriate Occupational Health and Safety training, reviewing hazard assessments, completing required safety documentation and ensuring scheduled site safety inspections are completed.
  • Responding to public concerns related to facility maintenance and working collaboratively with Alberta Parks staff, contractors and other partners to identify practical and effective solutions.

This position is well suited to a hands-on leader who can balance people leadership, maintenance operations, equipment and facility management, safety, contractor coordination and changing operational priorities while contributing to a positive visitor experience in Alberta Parks.
