Role Responsibilities

  • Uncover your impact and see how your organizational skills shape wildfire logistics. As a Wildfire Logistics Assistant reporting to the Logistics Coordinator in one of Alberta’s Forest Area Offices, you play an integral role in supporting wildfire needs.

In this dynamic, ever-changing environment, your collaboration with various parties is essential. With the guidance of the Logistics Coordinator and Duty Officer, your demonstrated communication skills and agility ensure success in managing changing priorities and coordinating resources.

Responsibilities

Resource Coordination:

  • Hire and coordinate various contracted resources for fire operations and pre-suppression needs, including Heavy Equipment, Firetack Crews, Fuel, Incident Camps and Facilities, Medics, Security, and Single Resource Personnel.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Effectively communicate with supervisors, duty officers, and other internal and external wildfire associates as needed.
  • Coordinate the sharing of personnel and equipment resources to other areas, both within and outside the province/country (import/export).

Tracking and Reporting:

  • Maintain various tracking systems (databases, spreadsheets, etc.) for procured resources, employee and contractor day counts, and work assignments to ensure real-time updates and situational awareness.

Emergency Response Support:

  • Provide logistical support to Incident Management Teams (IMT) during emergency response situations.
  • Be available for travel to work in other forest areas, both within and outside the province.

Data Entry and Documentation:

  • Ensure accurate data entry without compromising attention to detail and adherence to pertinent Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and business rules. 
  • Intake and document information received through multiple mediums, such as phone calls, emails, and face-to-face conversations.

Procurement Services:

  • Assist in procurement services, such as accommodations, vehicle rental, ATV rentals, and facilities, following established procurement guidelines.

Financial Operations:

  • Assist with accurate review of invoices for services and contractor time certificates.
  • Oversee purchases and reconciliation of procurement cards within department financial guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma plus one (1) year of related experience. Proficient computer skills, encompassing keyboarding, data record management, and demonstrated organizational experience

  • Must be 17 years of age or older prior to start date

 

Directly related experience or education may be considered on the basis of:

  • one year of experience for one year of education or 
  • one year of education for one year of experience

 

Additional Requirements
The following conditions are not required at time of application, but must be provided prior to start date:

  • A valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or an equivalent Canadian license.   
  • A minimum 3-year Driver's Abstract, showing a record of seven (7) demerits or less (obtained within 30 days of your commencement date and presented to management prior to commencement).   
  • A valid Standard First Aid certificate with CPR certification.   
  • A current Defensive Driving certificate.   

 

Assets:

  • Experience with or knowledge of the forestry sector, including software such as Fire Information Resources System (FIRES) and Dispatch.
  • Contract management and/or procurement experience.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment and equipment capabilities used in wildfire operations.
  • Knowledge of resources used in wildfire operations and the Incident Command System.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Notes

This competition is recruiting for seasonal wage Wildfire Logistics Assistant positions across all Alberta Forest Areas, with weekly hours up to 40 hours per week. 

 

About Your Work Environment: 

Estimated term of employment is from 3 to 8 months during the wildfire season, anticipated between March 1 and October 31. 

 

Extended hours could be required with little to no notice, depending on the wildfire situation. Hours are accumulated based on work schedule (5 days on and 2 days off, or 10 days on and 4 days off). 

 

Candidates are required to have their own means of transportation to and from the work site.

What We Offer:  

  • Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave  
    • 5.6% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays   
    • 6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay  
  • Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, overnight, evening, and weekend shifts 
  • Premium Pay Allowances 
    • Wage employees residing above the 57th Parallel (i.e., High Level Forest Area) may be eligible for a biweekly Northern allowance of $241.38.    
    • Wage employees residing within the Fort McMurray Forest Area receive a biweekly allowance of $478.17 (pro-rated for part-time employees).    
  • Free accommodations and meals may be available as determined by the Forest Area
