The Ministry of Children and Family Services funds programs and services to support vulnerable children, youth, families, and individuals to live safely and succeed in Alberta. This includes providing services and resources to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect, and effectively address harm that has placed them in need of intervention. Mentoring and support services are available to youth transitioning into healthy, productive adults. The ministry also invests in community-based groups that support prevention and early intervention services such as Family Resource Networks, youth emergency shelters as well as programs that raise awareness and help respond to family violence, sexual violence, and abuse.

Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to start a new adventure where you will lead casework practice and a team that strives for the pursuit of excellence in providing services to children, youth, and families. Step forward and start your journey in the North Region as a Child Intervention Supervisor/Caregiver Supervisor. We are looking for individuals that are interested in relocating or can travel to support teams on site. 

As a Child Intervention Supervisor/Caregiver Supervisor, you will support the alignment of casework practice by following the direction and working towards the operational goals of the Ministry of Children and Family Services. Your dynamic leadership will demonstrate your talents and enthusiasm to coach, mentor and guide your team within the child intervention practice framework, signs of safety, as well as Intake and Safety Phase Workflow.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Sound practice and the ability to prioritize multiple projects and assignments that decisions support the safety for children, youth, and families. 
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills that enhance your ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • The importance of working collaboratively with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities by showing how you share your knowledge of the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
  • Exceptional team building skills that maintain and enhance strong and effective teams who embrace change.
  • The ability to empower a team and provide direction and support for inclusive practices, build strength in the delivery of services in accordance with the accepted practices and within the guidelines of legislation, regulations, policy, and procedures.
  • Build staff capacity to support critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills and apply a trauma-informed practice lens.
  • The ability to engage a team by setting individual and unit goals by providing ongoing case consultation and practice supervision.
  • Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. 
  • The Child Intervention Practitioner competencies with consistency at an advanced level of proficiency, according to the Child Intervention Practice Framework Principles, to provide practice supervision to CI staff.   
  • Engaging in and fostering active listening, creating an atmosphere of respect and positive problem solving. Ensuring one’s verbal and non-verbal communication is congruent. Demonstrating an awareness of the impact of one’s communication in both oral and written form.

Qualifications

Education:  

  • A Bachelor of Social Work or Social Work Diploma and 2 years of related experience; or  
  • A related degree and 4 years of related experience or a related diploma and 5 years of related experience.  
  • Related education can include: Bachelor of Child Studies/Child & Youth Care, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Human Services, BA/BSc Psychology, BA Sociology, Bachelor of Community Rehab, BSc Family Studies/Human Ecology, BA Early Child Development, Law Degree, Addictions/Counseling Diploma, Child and Youth Care Diploma, and Criminal Justice Diploma.  


The following equivalencies maybe considered;   

  • Master of Social Work and 1 year related experience; or  
  • Related certificate and 6 years related experience.  


Note:  

Equivalency for professional roles related to Child Intervention: Directly related degree or diploma, successful completion of in-service or comparable training and 2 years of directly related experience.  

Related Experience Includes:  

  • Experience working with children, youth and families is essential.
  • Knowledge of community resources is essential. 
  • Experience working with Microsoft office is required.
  • Working knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act is essential.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Child Intervention Practice Framework and Signs of Safety is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Assets:  

  • Preference will be given to those candidates who are Delegated.
  • Previous supervisory and leadership experience would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Caregiver Regional program including Kinship, Adoption and Foster Care.
  •  Knowledge and experience of Assessment and Support for Kinship Caregiving (ASKC) is an asset.  
  • Experience working with a multi-cultural and/or multi-language-based caseload would be beneficial. 
  • Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities is required. 

 
Preference will be given to those candidates who have completed the Foundations, and Relationship and Culture pathways in the Ministry’s ICUF.  Recognizing that there will be exceptional situations, managers and supervisors who have not completed the training, will be given 12 months from their respective effective dates or from their hiring date thereafter to initiate/complete training. Application for equivalencies based on previous training will be assessed individually. 

 

The ideal candidates will have a strong working knowledge of the Child, Youth, and Family Enhancement Act and other related legislations (e.g. PSECA), as well as possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong critical thinking skills and previous supervisory experience.

Currently recruiting for  full-time permanent positions in the North Region:

  • 2 Caregiver Supervisors - permanent positions
  • 2 Child Intervention Supervisors - permanent positions

 

Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week (full-time).

These roles are required to participate in after-hours on-call rotations.

 

Location:

Successful candidate may reside and work out of the following locations in the North Region: Athabasca, Barrhead, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Edson, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, High Prairie, High Level, Hinton, Lac La Biche, Peace River, Slave Lake, St. Paul, Vegreville, Westlock, and Whitecourt.

Role Requirements:

  • You carry a valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • As per the Health Professions Act, successful applicants must be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) to be eligible for this position, if:
    • They have a degree in social work from any university in North America that is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) or the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE); or they have graduated from an approved social work diploma program in Alberta;
    • They have, within the last five years, been a registered, certified, or licensed social worker in another province or with a member of the Association of Social Work Boards.

Travel:

  • Travel will be required in the role in Alberta and out of province if the need arises. Final candidates for this position will be asked to provide a current 5-year commercial driver's abstract if it is not already on file.
  • Employee may also be required to use their own vehicle when government fleet vehicles are not available. Appropriate insurance is required.
