Role Responsibilities

The Alberta Court of Justice and Alberta Justice welcome the interest of qualified lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment as a full-time or part-time Justice of the Peace. Applications are being sought for various locations across the province on an on-going basis. Immediate vacancies are available in Edmonton and Medicine Hat.

Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta, with a minimum of five years of related experience at the Bar. To be considered eligible, applicants must go through a screening process and be recommended for appointment by the Judicial Council and the Provincial Court Nominating Committee.

Applicants will be considered on the basis of criteria such as integrity, professional excellence, community and social awareness, cultural sensitivity, and personal suitability. Appointments are for a ten-year term.

Restrictions on other Employment

Successful full-time applicants, unless otherwise authorized by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, will not be able to practice law. Successful part-time applicants will not be able to practice criminal law or family law, appear as counsel on any matters in the Alberta Court of Justice, represent any client in any proceeding involving the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada, or represent the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada in any proceeding.

  • Shift work is a requirement of these positions
  • Interview and relocation expenses will not be granted
  • This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies
