The Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the Chief and Head Office, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication, and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS) and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS). 

This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies for permanent Sheriff, in Court Security Services, Transportation Services and Sheriff Highway Patrol.

Sheriff Highway Patrol (SHPS) – Job Description

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR - Level C (must be valid until January 2026)
  • Must have standards equivalent to those of the Canadian/American Heart and Stroke Foundation.
  • A 10-year commercial Driver’s Abstract (issued within 3 weeks of application) 
  • Proof of valid AB Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) (CSS & PCIS)
  • Sheriff Highway Patrol requires a valid AB class 5 driver’s license.
  • A good driving record is essential (maximum of five demerits). You must be comfortable operating a vehicle in busy driving conditions.
  • IQAS or other standard equivalency certificate for educational credentials granted outside of Canada.

Law Court Sheriffs 

A Law Court Sheriff is an entry level position, which can lead to opportunities in other directorates across the Branch. Please see https://www.alberta.ca/sheriff-career for more information.

As a Law Court Sheriff you will provide a secure and armed presence within Alberta court facilities. In addition, you will ensure the safety and security of all persons within the above assigned areas including the judiciary, government employees and officials, as well as members of the public.

Specific duties include: 
 

  • Escorting prisoners to and from various facilities
  • Assisting with out of province prisoner escorts
  • Screening persons entering courthouses.
  • Monitoring courtrooms and supervising prisoners attending court.
  • Supervising prisoners within holding cells ensuring care, custody, and control.
  • Providing security services for special events and conferences
  • Patrolling designated facilities


As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism and reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

The Law Court position works 7.75 hours/per day from Monday to Friday.

Protection, Communication, and Investigative Services (Transport Services): 

This position provides effective and efficient prisoner management and transportation throughout the province, transporting and escorting prisoners from RCMP detachments, municipal police agencies, correctional or mental health institutions, provincial centres, and federal penitentiaries to provincial courthouses or the reverse, and escorting prisoners to hospitals as required. In addition, this position performs out-of-province prisoner escorts to bring individuals arrested in Canada but outside of Alberta back to the province. 

11.07 hour – 7 day a week rotating 2-week time balanced schedule.

Sheriff Highway Patrol: 

Sheriff Highway Patrol Officer’s work within the “Sheriff Highway Patrol” section of the Sheriffs Branch. The Sheriff Highway Patrol has a mandate to reduce serious injury and fatal motor vehicle collisions on Alberta’s highways, protect highway infrastructure to keep them viable for the movement of traffic that promotes the Alberta economy, and to respond to calls for service and collisions that occur on provincial roadways. 

Sheriff Highway Patrol officers provide complex and highly specialized services in collision response and investigation, awareness and educational presentations, as well as warrant apprehension, and traffic safety enforcement through the investigation of related provincial statute and criminal code offences. The officers work within continually evolving and potentially dangerous environments. Under the Rural Alberta Provincial Integrated Defence Response initiative (RAPID Response), Sheriff Highway Patrol officers are designated primary responders tasked with intercepting, attending, and investigating 911 service calls inclusive of criminal driving offences and motor vehicle collisions up to and including criminal/fatal collisions.

Reporting to a Sheriff Highway Patrol Supervisor (Sergeant,) this position works within applicable legislation, policies and procedures, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and other provincial and federal statutes. A Traffic Investigator exercises their authority as a Peace Officer (Sheriff) under the Alberta Peace Officer Act.

This position works a rotating 9.25-hour shift schedule, including evenings and weekends.


Positions under this directorate are eligible for an 8% RAPID salary modifier after completion of required training, including the field training portion of the impaired driving investigations curriculum.

Transport Services: Calgary and Edmonton 


Successful candidates will receive conditional offers of employment until successful completion of the below training located in : Edmonton, AB

  • Sheriff Recruit Transition Training (SRT-T) (8 weeks)
  • Sheriff Highway Patrol Induction Training (SHP-IT/CVSA) (19 weeks)
  • Sheriff Highway Patrol Field Training Program (32 weeks)


Failure to complete and maintain the above certifications will result in termination of the conditional offer, and the candidate may be returned to their previous position in the Branch.

Qualifications

A minimum of a two-year diploma is required. A post-secondary diploma, degree, or journeyman certification in any field may be considered. At least two years of progressively responsible related experience is also required.

Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

To qualify as an experienced officer for Sheriff Highway Patrol, candidates must have:
 

  • Previously been employed full time or part time as a sworn police officer for a minimum period of 2 years or
  • Previously been employed full time or part time as a Level 1 Community Peace Officer (or equivalent), within Canada at the federal, provincial, or municipal level for a minimum period of 2 years. Must provide proof of training completion.


To qualify as an experienced officer for Law Court Sheriffs and Protection, Communication, and Investigative Services, candidates must have:
 

  • Previously been employed full time or part time as a Correctional Peace Officer with the Government of Alberta for a minimum period of 2 years and completed Correctional Services In-service Training (CSIT).


Working as a sworn police officer within Alberta in the past five years is an asset. 

For CSS and PCIS working as a Correctional Peace Officer within the Government of Alberta in the past five years is an asset.
