The Alberta Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the Chief and Head Office, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court and Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication, and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS) and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS).

Alberta Law Court Sheriff’s service Law Courts and Court Houses in various parts of Alberta such as:

  • Calgary Law Court
  • Edmonton Law Court
  • Fort McMurray Court House
  • Grande Prairie Court House
  • High Level Court House
  • High Prairie Court House
  • Hinton Court House
  • Lethbridge Court House
  • Medicine Hat Law Court

This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies for permanent Sheriff, Court, and Security Services positions. Candidates who are successful in the selection process will be placed in a Talent Pool for up to twelve (12) months. 

Role Responsibilities

The Alberta Sheriffs Branch’s Court and Security Services directorate is currently seeking new positive role models that are mature, confident, self-motivated and reliable with cultural and community awareness to join their team!  

As a Law Court Sheriff you will provide a secure and armed presence within Alberta court facilities. In addition, you will ensure the safety and security of all persons within the above assigned areas including the judiciary, government employees and officials, as well as members of the public.

Specific duties include:

  • Escorting prisoners to and from various facilities. 
  • Assisting with out-of-province prisoner escorts. 
  • Screening people entering courthouses. 
  • Monitoring courtrooms and supervising prisoners attending court. 
  • Supervising prisoners within holding cells ensuring care, custody, and control. 
  • Providing security services for special events and conferences. 
  • Patrolling designated facilities.

As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism and reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

Qualifications

A minimum of a two-year diploma is required PLUS at least two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent (1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience).

  • Satisfactory 10-Year Commercial Driver’s abstract (Note: Please ensure you do not obtain a Summary of Driving Record) 
  • Valid Class 4 Alberta Driver's License or equivalent 
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level-C certification with AED 
  • Certified evaluation assessment certificate of post-secondary credentials obtained OUTSIDE of Canada (if applicable)

  • This position works Monday to Friday, 38.75 hours per week.
  • The number of positions to be filled has not been identified at this time as vacancies in various locations will vary.
