The Alberta Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the Chief and Head Office, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court and Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication, and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS) and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS).

Alberta Law Court Sheriff’s service Law Courts and Court Houses in various parts of Alberta such as:

This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies for permanent Sheriff, Court, and Security Services positions. Candidates who are successful in the selection process will be placed in a Talent Pool for up to twelve (12) months.

The Alberta Sheriffs Branch’s Court and Security Services directorate is currently seeking new positive role models that are confident, self-motivated and reliable with cultural and community awareness to join their team!
As a Law Court Sheriff you will provide a secure and armed presence within Alberta court facilities. In addition, you will ensure the safety and security of all persons within the above assigned areas including the judiciary, government employees and officials, as well as members of the public.
Specific duties include:
• Escorting prisoners to and from various facilities.
• Assisting with out of province prisoner escorts.
• Screening people entering courthouses.
• Monitoring courtrooms and supervising prisoners attending court.
• Supervising prisoners within holding cells ensuring care, custody, and control.
• Providing security services for special events and conferences.
• Patrolling designated facilities.
As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism and reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

Qualifications
A minimum of a two-year diploma is required PLUS at least two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent (1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience).
Additional requirements:
• Satisfactory 10-year Commercial Drivers abstract
• Valid Class 4 Alberta Driver's License or equivalent (to be obtained by Nov 21st, 2025, at 11:59PM MDT)
• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level-C Certification (to be obtained by Nov 21st, 2025, at 11:59PM MDT)
• Enhanced Reliability Clearance (with fingerprints)
• Certified evaluation assessment certificate of post-secondary credentials obtained OUTSIDE of Canada (if applicable)
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in the following areas:
• Security, where the role regularly requires direct contact with the public (e.g. mall security, hospital security, airport screening officer, loss prevention officer, commissionaire, armed guard, etc.)
• Bylaw enforcement
• Military service with focus on protection or security
• Emergency response (e.g. EMT or firefighter)
• Working with adults with mental health or behavioural issues
• Client group work (e.g. group homes, aboriginal camps)
• Working with youth in areas such as: Working under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, working with youth in an education setting, providing services to youth with disabilities, youth mentorship, youth counselling service, crisis intervention workers, shelter staff, and/or addiction support workers.
The following are considered assets:
• Previous experience in school support roles (e.g. school support workers, behavioral aides, classroom supervisors)
• Previous experience in crisis and emergency communication roles (e.g. crisis line operators, emergency dispatchers, regulated customer support)
• Previous experience in public-facing transit and crowd management roles (e.g. transit operators, fare enforcement officers, crowd control personnel)
• Previous experience in regulated or service-oriented environments (banking, retail, customer facing food industry roles)
• Previous experience in healthcare support roles (e.g. unit clerks, patient support staff, physiotherapy assistants)
• Previous experience in social service and rehabilitation roles (e.g. outreach workers, rehabilitation assistants, childcare workers)
