The Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the Chief and Head Office, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication, and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS) and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS).
This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies for permanent Sheriff, Court and Security Services positions. Candidates who are successful in the selection process will be placed in a Talent Pool up to six months.
The number of positions to be filled has not been identified at this time. This competition will be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates to fill upcoming opportunities.
As part of the application process, you are required to submit the following with your resume:
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR - Level C (must be valid until April 2026 )
- A current “Level C” certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Must have standards equivalent to those of the Canadian/American Heart and Stroke Foundation.
- A 10-year commercial Driver’s Abstract (issued within 3 weeks of application)
- Proof of valid AB Class 4 Driver’s License (or equivalent)
- A good driving record is essential (maximum of five demerits).
- IQAS or other standard equivalency certificate for educational credentials granted outside of Canada.

Sheriffs Branch Court and Security Services directorate is currently seeking new Law Court Sheriffs at various locations across Alberta.
Law Court Sheriffs are based out of Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, High Level, High Prairie, Hinton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Peace River, Red Deer, St. Paul, Vermilion, and Wetaskiwin (there may not be vacancies in all of these locations).

As a Law Court Sheriff you will provide a secure and armed presence within Alberta court facilities. In addition, you will ensure the safety and security of all persons within the above assigned areas including the judiciary, government employees and officials, as well as members of the public.
Specific duties include:
- Escorting prisoners to and from various facilities.
- Assisting with out of province prisoner escorts.
- Screening people entering courthouses.
- Monitoring courtrooms and supervising prisoners attending court.
- Supervising prisoners within holding cells ensuring care, custody, and control.
- Providing security services for special events and conferences.
- Patrolling designated facilities.
As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism and reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

Qualifications
A minimum of a two-year diploma is required. A post-secondary diploma, degree, or journeyman certification in any field may be considered. PLUS at least two years of progressively responsible related experience.
Preferences:
- Educational credentials in the areas of law enforcement, criminal justice, justice studies, sociology, psychology or comparable programs.
- Applicants with journeyman qualifications in mechanics or heavy-duty mechanics or comparable programs.
Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
Candidates with less experience and education may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
The following are considered assets for this role:
- Experience interacting with the public in a problem-solving role (ex: working in a bank, restaurant, hospital, school, working with vulnerable populations, etc.).
- Experience in any supervisory or leadership position that oversees a team and provides a service to clients.

This position works Monday to Friday, 38.75 hours per week.

The Recruitment Process :
- Step 1 – Submit application online with all required documents.
- Step 2 – Must complete a Personal Disclosure Questionnaire (PDQ) and pass.
- Step 3 – If you meet the MRS and pass the PDQ, you may be invited to the Recruit Assessment Centre (RAC) in Edmonton. This must be attended in-person, and will include a 30-question test, an in-person interview, the PARE test (4:45 passing time) and a PDQ Interview.
- Step 4 – If successful at RAC, you will be sent to get your psychological assessment done.
- Step 5 – If you pass the psychological assessment, you will be sent for a pre-employment medical assessment. (This is a complete medical examination, including Vision and Hearing tests, paid for by applicant.)
- Step 6 – Cleared by Medical assessment.
- Step 7 – Background and reference checks.
- Step 8 – Training is completed at the Justice and Solicitor General's Training Academy, located in Edmonton. Sheriff recruit training is a fifteen-week consisting of classroom and field experience. Once graduated, an additional nine to ten months of on-the-job training is conducted.
