Role Responsibilities

As a Senior Wildlife Biologist reporting to the Regional Wildlife Manager, you will spearhead initiatives to monitor and manage wildlife populations, conduct field research, and provide expert advice on conservation strategies. Your work will play a crucial role in the sustainable management of Alberta’s natural resources, ensuring wildlife thrives for generations to come.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct wildlife population assessments and habitat studies.
- Develop and implement conservation plans and policies.
- Collaborate with government agencies, stakeholders, and the public to promote wildlife conservation.
- Engage and consult with First Nations and Metis communities.
- Provide expert guidance on wildlife management issues.
- Analyze data and prepare comprehensive reports on wildlife status, assessment and population trends.
- Mentor and guide junior biologists and technicians.

Qualifications
Requirements:
- University degree in Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Renewable Resources, Conservation Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 6 years of experience in wildlife and land use management, including data collection, population and habitat monitoring, species life histories, disease identification, and stakeholder consultation.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
Equivalency:
- A related two-year diploma plus 8 years related experience.
- Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.
Assets:
- Completion of a post-graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in a related field such as Wildlife Management.
- Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), particularly ESRI ArcGIS platforms.
- Significant experience in the design, coordination, and delivery of wildlife surveys using rotary and/or fixed-wing aircraft.
- Comprehensive knowledge of legislation guiding wildlife management, including the Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Forest Act, and related regulations, along with OH&S and WHMIS.
- Ability to operate a wide range of equipment and machinery, including but not limited to: Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs), snowmobiles, and 4X4 trucks for wildlife monitoring or habitat assessment.
Candidates who do not yet meet all the qualifications may be considered for a position at a lower classification level, with the opportunity to advance to the higher classification once all criteria are fully met.

Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
This is a full-time permanent position that will be located in Slave Lake. Consideration may be given to other adjacent locations within the Northwest Region.
Working and living in Slave Lake: 55th to 57th parallels retention allowance: Eligible employees (salary, temporary salary, contract of employment) who work and reside in locations between the 55th and 57th parallels (excluding those eligible for the Fort McMurray Allowance) shall be paid an annual retention bonus of $6,000.00, less all lawful deductions.
