The Infrastructure and Service Management (ISM) Branch manages, operates and supports the information management technology (IMT) infrastructure and productivity tools, and manages the overall provision of technical services, incidents response, and IMT service requests for the Government of Alberta (GoA).

Role Responsibilities

The ISM branch is looking for a Transformation SME. This position reports to the Associate Director, Infrastructure Transformation.

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing strategic technology expertise to address operational, technical, and business challenges, while staying updated on advancements in infrastructure, cloud, AI, and user support practices.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with ministry contacts, business areas, and vendors to foster collaboration and innovation.
  • Leading virtual work initiatives, proof-of-concept projects, and providing training opportunities to enhance TS staff skills and engagement.
  • Guiding project management and agile processes by defining requirements, managing timelines, and ensuring adherence to ITIL standards, while serving as a technical lead or project manager as needed.
  • Evaluating and pilot emerging technologies for potential application in government, assessing their impact and opportunities for innovation.
  • Overseeing vendor relationships, coordinating service enhancements, troubleshooting issues, and reviewing/approving change requests to ensure contract compliance and service quality.
  • Delivering IT development, maintenance, and support by planning and implementing changes, identifying risks, mentoring junior analysts, and improving service delivery and customer relations.
  • Providing technical support for IT services/products by managing lifecycles, resolving technical issues, enhancing system performance, and participating in on-call rotations as needed.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field supplemented by at least four (4) years of progressively responsible technical experience in the IT field, specifically related to the technologies and responsibilities of this position.
  • Proven hands-on experience in enterprise networking (e.g., SD-WAN, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, firewalls).
  • Strong cybersecurity operations background, including SIEM tools, threat modeling, risk assessments, and incident response.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native networking and security architectures (Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Working knowledge of AI Ops, SIEM, SOAR, XDR platforms.
  • Understanding of zero-trust architectures, SASE, and identity-based security.
  • Certifications: CCNP/CCIE, CISSP/CEH, and Azure AI/ML or equivalent.
  • Python skills and experience with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Strong experience with VPN technologies.


Equivalencies:

  • A related two-year diploma in a related field from a recognized postsecondary institution and six (6) years related experience; or
  • A related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven (7) years related experience.


Assets:

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional CCNP or CCIE (routing and switching).
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional CCNP or CCIE (Security).
  • Juniper Networks Certified Specialist (JNCIS or JNCIP).
  • CompTIA Network+ (for foundational understanding).
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
  • Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH).

Notes

Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position.

Hours of Work: 7.25 hours daily / 36.25 weekly – Monday to Friday.

Location: Remote in Alberta.

This position is eligible for remote work. You must reside in Alberta to work remotely.
