The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) provides essential support for individuals that are not able to make personal or financial decisions. It offers guardianship and trusteeship services, administers estates, and manages benefits. OPGT also oversees capacity assessments, investigates complaints regarding decision-makers, and provides guidance on advance planning and personal directives. Role Responsibilities
Are you looking for a role where you can actively make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Albertans? Do you thrive in a dynamic and collaborative work environment? The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee is currently seeking a Public Guardian Representative for Red Deer.
OPGT provides guardianship services from offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, and North and South Regional offices. Our dynamic team of professionals are committed to making quality decisions on behalf of vulnerable adults within an assigned caseload.
As a Public Guardian Representative, you must:
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients and their supports in order to make decisions in their best interests.
- Be skilled at coordinating and participating in case conferences in order to engage clients, keep families and other stakeholders informed, and create opportunities that allow clients to have meaningful input into their plans.
- Be well-versed in negotiating case management plans; reviewing and determining suitable community services to assist clients with complex needs.
- Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
- Perform the Review Officer function for court applications.
- Drive a positive workplace culture.
- Adapt to a flexible schedule – occasional public presentations/meetings in the evening and on weekends.
- Be willing to participate in an on-call/after-hours rotation (approximately one week per year).
As the successful candidate, you will possess:
- Excellent collaboration and negotiation skills
- Effective oral and writing skills – documentation and communication with physicians, allied health professionals and with all aspects of the judicial system is a daily part of this role
- Strong interviewing and assessment skills
- Outstanding problem-solving, mediation, and conflict resolutions skills
- An ability to develop and maintain positive workplace relationships
- Strong research and advocacy skills

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor of Social Work with some directly related experience working with represented adults.
Equivalency:
- Master of Social Work, no experience required.
- Related university degree and 2 years related experience.
- Related diploma and 3 years related experience.
- Related certificate and 4 years related experience.
Other Requirements
- Experience working with the vulnerable sector.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Cover letter demonstrating how your education and experience relates to this role.
Assets
- Experience working in a front line case management role (e.g., income support, AISH, PDD, Children’s Services, etc.).
- Experience interacting with community service providers, health providers, the justice system and other government agencies.
- Experience working with vulnerable adults such as persons with dementia, severe and persistent psychiatric disorders, developmental disabilities, and acquired brain injury.
- Experience providing service delivery in accordance with the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act, the Personal Directives Act or the Mental Health Act, and associated regulations and policies.
- Experience working with court procedures.

Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday – Friday
