The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division (TIFS) expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bio-product manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.

The Food and Bio-Processing Branch (FBPB) provides scientific and technical expertise, business development services and specialized facilities to support product/process development, scale up and commercialization of food and non-food products for companies serving local, national, and global markets.

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about Alberta’s meat processing industry? Do you have technical expertise in meat product and process development? If so, we invite you to join our team as a Meat Processing Industry Development Officer.

Reporting to the Manager, Business Development, the Meat Processing Industry Development Officer, provides specialized technical meat processing knowledge and information to meat processors, senior executives and Ministry staff, other government agencies and industry organizations. The position is responsible for developing and administering programs and services that will lead to the support and growth of a competitive and sustainable meat processing industry. 

The Meat Processing Industry Development Officer, provides leadership, expertise and guidance to support the expansion of the meat processing industry in Alberta, adhering to the policies and directives of the Ministry.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership to meat processors, assisting in the development of innovative and market-responsive products.
  • Facilitate product development and market launches to strengthen Alberta’s meat processing industry.
  • Provide specialized services to enhance the domestic and global competitiveness of Alberta’s meat industry.
  • Foster partnerships, strategic alliances, and sustainable practices to support the growth of the sector.


Your work will directly support Alberta’s competitive and sustainable meat processing industry by aligning industry needs with the Ministry’s policies and programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards:

  • University graduation in Food Science, Agricultural Sciences, Economics or a related field, plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below. 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Additional Requirements:

  • Candidates must have experience working in a manufacturing facility.
  • Experience meeting with clients in the Meat Sector Industry.
  • Knowledge or experience in livestock handling, carcass cutout evaluation, value added processing, and the equipment associated with these activities. 


Assets:

  • Extensive expertise in the meat and food processing sector, including product and process development, supply chain management, market analysis, and new product launches. 
  • Strong understanding of food safety, food processing technology, and environmentally sustainable processing practices. 
  • In-depth knowledge of Alberta’s meat processing regulatory framework and broader agri processing legislation (e.g., Business Licensing, Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, Food and Drug Act, global regulations). 
  • Broad knowledge of the agri processing industry ecosystem, including supply chain, infrastructure, transportation, distribution, and retail/food service operations. 
  • Skilled in consulting, coaching clients, and facilitating value added opportunities, strategic alliances, and business networks.

Position Information:

  • Office located in Red Deer at the Red Deer Provincial Building (4920-51 Street, Red Deer, AB T4N 6K8).
  • Other locations may be considered (Please list preferred location in the pre-screening question section).
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
  • Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm).
