Role

The Executive Director of Driver, Carrier and Vehicle Services reports to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Traffic Safety Services. This role is responsible for ensuring Alberta has a safe and efficient transportation system that supports the province’s economic, social, and environmental health by overseeing essential programs. The policies and initiatives from this branch play an important role in shaping Alberta’s transportation network, workforce, and efforts toward economic recovery.

The Executive Director (ED) provides strategic leadership and comprehensive operational oversight for Alberta’s regulated industries, including commercial carriers and buses, driver training schools, driving instructors, driver examiners, vehicle inspection facilities, vehicle technicians, and provincial railways. This position is accountable for ensuring the efficient administration of licensing and certification programs, managing permitting processes and exemptions, and upholding rigorous standards for driver training and examination. A critical aspect of this role involves managing Alberta’s participation in the International Registration Plan (IRP), a reciprocal registration system supporting commercial carrier operations throughout Canada and the United States. Additionally, the Executive Director serves as the steward of vehicle standards, ensuring that robust regulatory frameworks exist to maintain technical compliance and facilitate the integration of new transportation technologies within the industry.

Strategic leadership, strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills and exceptional communication are essential in this role. Stakeholder engagement is essential to ensuring a proactive approach to identify opportunities and resolve issues and to ensure that the regulatory framework is as effective as it can be. Given the high-profile nature of issues in this branch, diplomacy and quick response are critical. A key aspect of this position is the ability to both identify challenges and implement effective solutions that advance the branch's objectives.
