Role Responsibilities
The Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridor’s is looking for a motivated individual to join the Construction and Maintenance Division in Peace River as Field Support Technologist. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position performs work of a technical nature. It is a full working level technologist, encompassing both the survey and materials testing disciplines. This position audits technical work done by consultants and maintenance contractor staff, ensuring that work carried out is in accordance with department standards, procedures, and contract specifications. The incumbent works closely with the Maintenance Contract Inspectors (MCI) in providing technical expertise, in the collection of inventory and condition rating information related to asset management, in preparation of quantity estimates for work orders and in monitoring work in progress. This position ensures budget expenditure information is provided to Operations Manager in a timely manner. When required, the incumbent may be required to act in the capacity of the MCI.
Responsibilities:
The main responsibilities for the Field Support Technologist are (but not limited to):
- Providing support for the administration of the highway maintenance contracts for the district and monitor roadway development, relaying any concerns to ensure the safety of the motoring public.
- Collecting highway appurtenance inventory data and assisting with asset control.
- Fulfilling a support role to development control staff for the district.
- Providing project management for smaller district contracts, service agreements, consultant agreements, etc.
- Providing creative and innovative solutions to complex maintenance problems.
This position requires tremendous flexibility due to the varied nature of assignments, the ability to learn new skills and be adaptable to new situations.

Qualifications
Required:
- Two-year technical diploma in a related field such as a Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology.
- Four years related experience with highway planning, design, construction, maintenance, and contract administration.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and ability to provide a clear drivers’ abstract.
- Willingness and ability to drive to work sites.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Asset:
- Experience with project planning/scheduling and budgets.
- Eligibility for membership with ASET.
- Experience with technical software such as TIMS, ITS, GIS program, MS Office.
- Demonstrated experience with contract administration, including compliance, quality assurance and audits.
- Experience in preliminary survey, construction layout, construction practices, plan/profiles, mosaics, as-built surveying, and project management.
- Experience in GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite hardware and procedures for collecting all highway appurtenance information within a contract maintenance area (CMA) for the asset management within the Department (e.g. Transportation Infrastructure Management System, Appurtenance Inventory Application)
- Experience with PMA - M software or similar, for creating work orders for accepting or rejecting work, verifying quantity and quality of completed work for payment to maintenance contractors, provide revisions/updates of bid items, unit prices, CMA segments, job numbers to the databases for the maintenance contract and to generate progress estimate payments to the maintenance contractors.
- Expertise in traffic safety, traffic accommodation strategies and traffic management through work zones and procedures for emergency situations including winter and summer maintenance methodologies and emergency response protocols.
- Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and complex technical processes.
