Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Bridge Manager, you will coordinate and administer the design and construction of the Region's bridge construction as well as rehabilitation program consistent with national codes and department guidelines, standards, policies, acts and technical as well as functional requirements. You will ensure the safe, efficient and timely delivery of the projects by consultants and contractors. 

Responsible for the selection, assessment and evaluation of consultants, all engineering work is reviewed throughout all phases of the project. The construction phase of the project is monitored to ensure that the work is completed safely and in accordance with department requirements and contract specifications.

Your responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Reviewing functional planning studies, bridge inspection and assessment reports as well as completing site visits to identify and determine the scope of the project.
  • Preparing the Terms of Reference within the required schedule for the project and act as a resource for questions as well as concerns from consultants during the proposal preparation period.
  • Reviewing and evaluating consultant proposals and serving as a member of Consultant Selection Committee to provide recommendations for the award of the project.
  • Scheduling and attending construction pre-commencement meetings to ensure that the Department's guidelines and standards will be followed during construction.
  • Completing construction site inspections to ensure that the consultant enforces and adheres to all regulatory permits, approvals and authorizations issued for the project.
  • Reviewing all engineering reports, designs, drawings and tender documents to ensure that the work completed by consultants meet department guidelines, standards, policies and provide the best value.
  • Identifying technical or operational issues that need to be addressed for future improvement.
  • Reviewing all project expenditures including consultant invoices, municipality payments, contractor progress estimates and providing recommendations for payment.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University graduation in Engineering plus five (5) years related experience in bridge and/or materials engineering. 
  • Eligibility for membership in APEGA.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

 

Equivalencies:

  • Additional related education will be considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Additional Position Details:

  • Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position.
  • Hours of Work: 7.25 hours daily / 36.25 weekly – Monday to Friday.
  • Location: Peace River.
  • Travel: This position requires regular travel throughout Alberta—typically between 50-75% of the work schedule. It offers a varied work environment that includes both field and office-based activities, ideal for individuals who enjoy a flexible and hands-on approach to their work.
  • Since Peace River is between the 55th and 57th parallels, eligible employees will receive an annual retention bonus of $6,000, minus deductions.
