Under the leadership of the Food Safety Branch, the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for regulating 115 red meat and poultry abattoirs, 110 mobile butchers and 48 mobile butcher facilities in Alberta. Join the teams located in various locations as a wage Meat Inspector and help play a role in maintaining Alberta's reputation for excellence in food safety! As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing inspection services at provincial abattoirs. Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include: pre-operation inspection, ante and post-mortem examination of animals, completion of time reporting and relevant inspection documentation.

This work requires an understanding of animal diseases and pathology, humane handling and stunning requirements, sanitation practices, and food safety control programs. This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS). You must be familiar with and have the ability to interpret the Meat Inspection Act, Meat Inspection Regulation, and Meat Facility Standards.


Two-year technical diploma in a related field, such as Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, plus a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience in kill floor ante-mortem and post-mortem meat inspection. Knowledge of animal diseases/pathology is required. Experience using computer technology is a must. Applicants with experience within the Canadian federal or provincial meat inspection system are preferred. Additional years of experience as a meat inspector is acceptable as an equivalency for the years of education requirement.

The successful candidate it expected to handle themselves in professional manner during trying times. Competence in operating computer technology and computer applications is necessary in this role for the purposes of daily communication and the preparation of inspection reports/documentation.

Must have the ability to understand, read and interpret a variety of legislative and regulatory documentation.


$30.91 - $40.48 hourly


We are currently looking for applicants who are interested in a 6-month wage opportunity. The hours are on an on-call, as needed basis with hours varying per week and no guaranteed hours of work. 

We are currently looking to fill a wage position in Lethbridge.

A valid Alberta driver’s license and a commercial driver’s abstract is required. Successful candidates may need to drive long distances before and after shifts. 

The ability to travel within Alberta is required.
