We have an exciting opportunity for a people-oriented, detail-driven, and public-service-minded professional to join the Appeals Secretariat, an organization dedicated to supporting fair, impartial, and transparent appeal processes for Albertans. The Appeals Secretariat plays a vital role in administering appeals for more than 4,000 Albertans each year across programs and services delivered by the ministries of Assisted Living and Social Services (ALSS), Children and Family Services (CFS), Education and Childcare (EC), Primary and Preventative Health Services (PPHS), and Mental Health and Addiction (MHA).

 

The Secretariat supports independent appeal panels by coordinating hearings, managing the appeal process, and providing administrative support to panel members, appellants, and program areas. Through the administration of appeals and the support provided to all parties involved, the Secretariat helps ensure Alberta's appeal system remains accessible, transparent, and responsive.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Appeals Coordinator, you will work independently as an Appeals Assistant, providing administrative support and guidance throughout the appeal process.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Serving as an important point of contact for Albertans navigating the appeal process, responding to inquiries and assisting with appeal documentation while maintaining neutrality and impartiality.
  • Reviewing appeal submissions, coordinate hearing logistics, prepare and distribute appeal packages
  • Maintaining appeal records
  • Supporting panel members in hearings
  • You will also identify and escalate sensitive or complex issues, support regional meetings and training activities for panel members.
  • Contributing to the efficient operation of the Appeals Secretariat through general office administration and team collaboration
  • General mail and front desk and reception duties

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Administrative Support 4 - High School diploma plus a minimum of two years of related administrative experience.

Equivalencies will be considered based on 1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.

  • Proven excellent communication and interpersonal skills to deal diplomatically and professionally with a variety of stakeholders at different levels of understanding
  • Ability to work with information technology, including various applications and systems (e.g.,

  • Ability to respond to changing priorities and meeting changing timelines

This is a permanent full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday

 

This position will be in Lethbridge, Alberta at the Lethbridge Administration Building
