Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Initiative
Managing the threat of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Alberta is an initiative to help stop the introduction and spread of AIS into Alberta's lakes, rivers, and across borders. Watercraft inspections are part of a larger province-wide AIS Program that includes monitoring, response planning, education campaigns, and policy. The Watercraft Inspections Program is focused primarily along major highways in Alberta and it is mandatory for all vehicles towing watercraft to stop at open inspection stations.

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about protecting Alberta waters for future generations to enjoy?

If you enjoy leading and motivating people, can handle pressure well, are mechanically inclined, are able to work outdoors for long hours, and love working with the public, this may be the job for you! We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to fill an AIS Supervisor / Decontamination Technician position in Lethbridge.

As a supervisor of a watercraft inspection station, you oversee daily operations, supervise inspectors, ensure adherence to procedures, maintain a safe and effective work environment, and provide guidance both during regular hours and as part of an on-call rotation.

•    Ensure compliance with operational procedures and maintain station standards.
•    Develop work schedules and manage staffing requirements.
•    Resolve operational issues promptly and efficiently.
•    Foster a culture of health, safety, and compliance.
•    Participate in an on-call rotation to provide guidance outside regular hours.

As a Decontamination Technician, you deliver the decontamination component of Alberta’s AIS program, providing services to watercraft requiring quarantine or treatment for invasive species. You have special authority under the Fisheries (Alberta) Act to enforce quarantine and decontamination and often travel extensively to manage high-risk watercraft.

Key Responsibilities:

•    Ensure compliance with AIS program standards and protocols.

When working with staff at inspection stations, you will be required to thoroughly inspect the interior and exterior of various types of watercraft to look for any presence of AIS.
Utilizing your exceptional communication skills, you will interview boaters to determine the risk of introducing AIS into Alberta's water bodies.

A key role of this position is to educate the public on the threat of AIS, particularly invasive mussels, and provide "Clean Drain Dry" outreach materials to the public aimed at changing boater behavior and reducing the spread of AIS.
You will be required to tow and back up trailers and use a high-pressure hot water decontamination unit for cleaning boats.
