Forestry and Parks is responsible for managing our forests, public lands and provincial parks. Our Ministry accountabilities include:

•    Growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector
•    Protecting Alberta’s forests from wildfire
•    Preserving our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans
•    Enabling access to public lands for recreation and purposes while prioritizing conservation
•    Managing public lands and balancing sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers

Within the Ministry, Land Operations Division, delivers an integrated approach to the management of provincial Crown Land. The work of the Division reflects the full range of users of the province’s Crown land including conservation, recreation, tourism, energy, forestry, agriculture and traditional land uses.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the local Field Supervisor, the Recreation Technician plays a critical role in preserving public safety, protecting environmental resources, and maintaining recreation infrastructure. The position supports safe and sustainable recreational experiences on Public Land through regular inspections and infrastructure repairs. The role is field-based and as a Recreation Technician, you will need to be physically fit and prepared to hike long distances, carry loads of up to 25 kg, and work comfortably in remote locations under all weather conditions. You may also spend extended periods of up to four days or more working from remote field camps.

Key responsibilities for this position will include:
•    Adhering to Occupational Health and Safety policies, procedures, and protocols (ex. daily hazard assessments, vehicle/equipment inspections)
•    Assisting with the construction, installation, or maintenance of recreation infrastructure such as trails, bridges, boardwalks, culverts, signs and kiosks 
•    Collecting data, capturing geospatial information, and conducting inspections of recreation sites and trails
•    Communicating information to the public and other stakeholders on recreation access, responsible use of Public Land, and rules related to Public Land Use Zones 
•    Operating power tools and heavy equipment (i.e. chainsaws, brush saws, tractors, skid steers, and excavators)
•    Operating off-highway vehicles (OHV) such as quads and side-by-sides
•    Loading trailers and hauling material, equipment, OHVs, or heavy equipment to site 
•    Performing preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment
•    Cleaning up garbage, removing structures, or abandoned trailers and vehicles

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
A completed high school diploma and some related experience (i.e. up to 12 months).

Equivalencies may be considered: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Additional Requirements:

The following conditions are not required at the time of application but must be provided prior to your start date. 

o    A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License 
o    A valid Intermediate First Aid certificate with CPR Level C and AED certificate.
o    Current Defensive Driving Certificate
o    Physically fit and able to safety carry up to 25kg


Related experience:

•    Experience in outdoor recreation, resource management, or environmental studies 
•    Experience trail building, landscaping, carpentry and/or construction
•    Experience with backcountry navigation and working in adverse weather conditions
•    Experience with digital data collection (i.e. ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza)
•    Chainsaw safety certificate (ex. Woodlands Trainers Assoc. Levels 1, 2 or 3) 
•    ATV/UTV training

Notes

•    This competition is recruiting for seasonal wage position located in Various locations within Alberta- 36.25 hours per week. 
•    Length of employment is approximately five months from April to September
•    This position requires a flexible work schedule, with the possibility of overtime and weekend shifts.

What We Offer
•    Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave:  
     o    5.6% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays  
     o    6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay
