As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector. We protect Alberta’s forests from wildfire and preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Role Responsibilities

Are you an expert in wildfire prevention? Elevate your career by joining us as a dedicated Wildfire Technologist. This unique forest landscape encompasses a diverse range of ecological zones, fire regimes, and fire risks, presenting distinct and demanding characteristics that define the Slave Lake Forest Area.


Under the guidance of the Wildfire Prevention Officer, you will have a vital role in executing all aspects of the wildfire operations program. Your responsibilities will entail the operational delivery of key aspects of the Detection, Pre-Suppression and Suppression programs in the Slave Lake Forest Area. Through the supervision of Forest Officers, Permanent/Wage program staff, this position plays a key leadership role. This involves constant program monitoring, decisive decision-making, comprehensive training, expert mentoring/coaching to ensure consistent and effective outcomes, thereby enhancing safety and program efficiency within the context the Forest Area’s unique circumstances.


Additionally, you will undertake the roles of Duty Officer and Deputy Duty Officer on a rotational basis at the designated Fire Centre. Including participating in a range of wildfire suppression and pre-suppression activities tailored specifically to the landscape of the Forest Area. Active involvement in Incident Command Teams, Provincial working groups, task forces and committees will be integral to your role. Furthermore, you will extend your duties to encompass supporting the Operations section, Forest management and enhancing forest health.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
 

  • The minimum requirements for Wildfire Technologist are a two-year related diploma plus four (4) years of related experience in wildfire operations and prevention. 


Directly related experience and or education may be considered on a one-for-one basis.


Additional requirements:
 

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License


Assets:

•    Supervisory experience is considered an asset
•    Eligibility for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals

Notes

Wildfire Technologist is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.


Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders. 


Candidates may be asked to complete a written assignment as a part of the interview process.
