Role Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity that requires a decisive and impartial individual who wants to be a part of the unique inmate disciplinary process within Alberta’s Provincial remand and correctional facilities. As a Hearing Adjudicator, you will play an instrumental role in the disciplinary framework for the Correctional Services Division by conducting quasi-judicial disciplinary hearings for inmates that have been institutionally charged.
Reporting to a Director within the Correctional Programs and Services Branch, the Hearing Adjudicator is essential to the inmate disciplinary hearing process within Alberta's provincial remand and correctional facilities, playing an instrumental and crucial role in implementing the inmate disciplinary framework for the Correctional Services Division. Working specifically within Alberta's Corrections Act, Correctional Regulation and Alberta Correctional Services Policy and Procedures, the Hearing Adjudicator reviews institutional charges and the associated allegations, conducts disciplinary hearings, and is solely responsible for determining the findings and an appropriate disposition.
The Hearing Adjudicator also identifies procedural issues, makes recommendations regarding processes, manages the change implementation process, and works effectively with all stakeholders. Superior communication skills are essential in conducting disciplinary hearings and in developing and sustaining positive working relationships. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills are required to manage a high volume of hearings fairly and effectively. Qualifications

University Degree in a related field (e.g., law, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology) plus six (6) years progressively responsible related experience.
Equivalency
Directly related education or experience considered based on one (1) year of related education for one (1) year of experience; or one (1) year of experience for one (1) year of related education
Assets
- Experience in investigatory processes and procedures
- Understanding of provincial correctional policy,
- Understanding of the Corrections Act and the Corrections Regulations
- Understanding of administrative tribunals
- Understanding of natural Justice Principles
- Senior Management experience in an enforcement department or agency.
A valid Alberta Driver’s License is required.
Notes
There is one temporary (3-year contract) full-time position available.
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
Location: Calgary Remand Centre - 12200 85 Street NW Calgary, Alberta T3R 1J3 Canada.
This position may require flexibility to alter work schedules outside of regular business hours if operationally required. The successful candidate may be appointed to a term of up to 3 years with the opportunity for reappointment. Candidates will be required to convene hearings in any of the several correctional or remand centres within Alberta. Candidates cannot perform the role within a remand or correctional facility where they have previously been employed within the last three years. Candidates will be required to complete hearings for more than one remand or correctional facilities (virtual and/or in-person hearings). Final candidates are required to undergo a Security Screening.
