As an Operations Engineer, you’ll play a key role in maintaining Alberta’s highway system, ensuring safe and sustainable roadways for millions of travelers across the province. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Operations Engineer is responsible for the delivery, administration, and continuous improvement of Alberta’s highway maintenance program. This role requires expertise in contract management, financial tracking, program development, and infrastructure assessment. You will collaborate with municipalities, contractors, and internal teams to ensure Alberta’s transportation network remains safe, efficient, and well-maintained. Your work will directly support economic growth, road safety, and long-term infrastructure planning.
 

Your key responsibilities include:
 

  • Ensuring compliance and efficiency in highway maintenance contracts to uphold safety and service standards.
  • Developing and refining maintenance specifications, budgets, and long-term forecasting models.
  • Providing expert engineering support on field design modifications, traffic accommodation strategies, and contract dispute resolution.
  • Assessing transportation system performance and identifying areas for operational enhancements.
  • Collecting and analyzing expenditure data to support effective financial planning and reporting.
  • Updating internal budget tracking systems to maintain compliance with financial forecasting requirements.
  • Reviewing roadside development applications to ensure the integrity and safety of Alberta’s highway system.
  • Liaising with municipalities, contractors, and stakeholders to align transportation projects with public and private sector needs.
  • Responding to public and municipal inquiries with clear, professional, and technically sound information.
  • Researching and preparing responses to Action Requests to ensure timely and accurate communication with stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • A related university degree (e.g., Civil Engineering), supplemented by at least five (5) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered. 
  • Eligible for membership with APEGA.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.


Preferred:

 

  • Extensive knowledge of highway maintenance, operations and construction procedures.
  • Experience in contract administration, dispute resolution, financial forecasting, and transportation planning.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

 

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm). 
  • Location: Provincial Building, 10320 - 99 St, Grande Prairie, AB  T8V 6J4
  • Eligible GoA employees who work and live between the 55th and 57th parallels (except Fort McMurray) will receive an annual retention bonus of $6,000, minus deductions.
  • Traveling will consist of 30% of the work schedule.
