We are currently looking to hire one full-time permanent meat inspector for the Grande Prairie region. The successful candidate may choose to be located in Grande Prairie, Peace River or High Level (or nearby). 

As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing slaughter inspection services at provincial abattoirs. 

Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include: 

  • pre-operation inspection 
  • ante and post-mortem examination of animals
  • completion of time reporting and;
  • relevant inspection documentation


This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS). 

The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for providing regulatory inspection service to approximately 120 licensed red meat and poultry abattoirs across Alberta.

Qualifications

Technologies 4 Meat Inspector

  • Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, and
  • Minimum of two (2) years of directly related meat inspection work experience (i.e. working as a meat inspector on kill floors)
  • Experience as a meat inspector within the Canadian federal or provincial systems required 


Equivalencies considered - directly related meat inspector experience considered on the basis of 1 year of meat inspector experience for 1 year of education.

  • Meat inspection experience may not be substituted with other education or experience.


Additional Assets to be successful in the role:  

  • Knowledge of animal diseases and pathology
  • Requirements for humane livestock handling and stunning
  • Food safety principles for slaughter and meat processing
  • Familiarity with and ability to interpret regulatory standards (e.g. Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), and Meat Facility Standards).
  • Experience using computer technology and applications (e.g Outlook, Word, Excel) is a must
  • Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (e.g. Verbal Judo) are an asset


The successful candidate must successfully complete all in-house training.

Candidates that do not meet Technologies 4 qualifications may be offered a Technologies 3 classification.

  • Technologies 3- Meat Inspector (Developmental) Qualifications: 
    • Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, Veterinary or Food Safety/Food Science, and
    • one (1) year of directly related industry experience.

Position Allowances

This position is also eligible to receive:

55th to 57th parallels retention allowance: Eligible employees (salary, temporary salary, contract of employment) who work and reside in locations between the 55th and 57th parallels (excluding those eligible for the Fort McMurray Allowance) shall be paid an annual retention bonus of $6,000.00, less all lawful deductions. https://collective-agreement.alberta.ca/Pages/My-HR/Collective-agreement/Letter-of-Understanding--13-55th-to-57th-Parallel-Retention-Allowance.aspx

OR the:

Northern Allowance Pay (High Level): Eligible employees employed at a location north of the 57th parallel of north latitude in the Province of Alberta shall be paid in addition to the Employee’s basic salary, a Northern Allowance of two hundred and forty-one dollars and thirty-eight cents ($241.38) for each bi-weekly pay period served. https://collective-agreement.alberta.ca/Pages/My-HR/Collective-agreement/Article-22-Northern-Allowance-Pay.aspx

Norther Trips (High Level): Permanent and Temporary Employees who are employed and reside in locations north of the 57th parallel are eligible for up to two (2) Employer paid return trips from their home location to Calgary (or an alternate urban location between their location and Calgary). Notes

  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full-time)
  • Work schedule runs Monday to Friday
  • Extended working hours (overtime) and/or travel will be required to complete assigned field work
  • Overtime rate will be applicable for all overtime
  • Some travel on weekends may be required to meet operational requirements
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required
  • Ability to work under varying site conditions including inclement weather conditions and wet surface areas/environments
  • PPE will be provided
  • In house training will be provided
  • The successful candidate must reside in or close to Grande Prairie or Peace River or High Level
  • Candidate must reside within the geographical boundaries of the regional work area and within a reasonable distance from their assigned office
  • Office is located where the successful candidate will reside
  • Candidate will be required to travel to La Crete and Grimshaw on a regular basis for inspection duties
  • Candidate may be required to reside in Grande Prairie for 6 to 12 months to complete training. 
  • Any relocation costs are the responsibility of the successful candidate
