As a Field Support Technologist, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring Alberta’s highways remain safe, efficient, and well-maintained. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Field Support Technologist provides support to the Maintenance Contract Inspectors to ensure compliance with maintenance contracts and technical standards. This role involves field inspections, data collection, and contractor oversight to maintain Alberta’s transportation network. You'll collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders to optimize highway infrastructure while ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation corridors.

 

Your key responsibilities include:

 

  • Assessing contractor performance to ensure compliance with emergency response and routine maintenance requirements.
  • Patrolling roadways to identify potential hazards and taking corrective actions.
  • Investigating vehicle collisions to determine road damage and recommend repairs.
  • Verifying contractor compliance with material use and work specifications.
  • Monitoring budget expenditures and preparing financial reports for contract oversight.
  • Preparing inspection reports, deficiency documentation, and technical assessments.
  • Recommending long-term maintenance strategies and providing input for future budget planning.
  • Assisting in the preparation and administration of minor highway contracts and service agreements.
  • Collecting inventory data for highway assets and ensuring proper asset control.
  • Supporting roadside development control initiatives and monitoring utility work within the highway right-of-way.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • A related technical diploma (e.g., Engineering), supplemented by at least four (4) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered. 
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of road design, construction, maintenance, and contract administration.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)


Assets:

 

  • C.E.T. designation (or eligibility) through the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals (ASET).

 

Equivalencies are:

 

  • A related four-year degree and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

 

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm). 
  • Due to the essential nature of the work, this role requires in-office presence at the Provincial Building, 10320 - 99 St, Grande Prairie, AB
  • Eligible GoA employees who work and live between the 55th and 57th parallels (except Fort McMurray) will receive an annual retention bonus of $6,000, minus deductions.
  • Travelling will consist of 75% or more of the work schedule.
