We are currently looking to hire a permanent full time meat inspector in Grande Prairie / La Crete region.
As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing slaughter inspection services on kill floors at provincial abattoirs.
Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include:
• pre-operation inspection
• ante and post-mortem examination of animals
• completion of time reporting and;
• relevant inspection documentation
This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS).
The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for providing regulatory inspection service to approximately 120 licensed red meat and poultry abattoirs across Alberta.

Qualifications
Technologies 4 Meat Inspector
Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, and a minimum of two (2) years of directly related meat inspection work experience (i.e. working as a meat inspector on kill floors). Experience as a meat inspector within the Canadian federal or provincial systems required.
Equivalencies considered - directly related Canadian meat inspector experience considered on the basis of 1 year of meat inspector experience for 1 year of education.
Meat inspection experience may not be substituted with other education or experience.
Additional Assets to be successful in the role:
• Knowledge of animal diseases and pathology
• Requirements for humane livestock handling and stunning
• Food safety principles for slaughter and meat processing
• Familiarity with and ability to interpret regulatory standards (e.g. Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), and Meat Facility Standards).
• Experience using computer technology and applications (e.g Outlook, Word, Excel) is a must.
• Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (e.g. Verbal Judo) are an asset.
The successful candidate must successfully complete all in-house training.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team while demonstrating the Alberta Public Service values of respect, integrity, accountability, and excellence are essential for success in this position.
Candidates that do not meet Technologies 4 qualifications may be offered a Technologies 3 classification.
Technologies 3- Meat Inspector (Developmental) Qualifications:
Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, Veterinary or Food Safety/Food Science, or two (2) years of directly related industry experience.
Equivalencies considered: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Preference given to candidates who have two (2) year technical diploma in a related field and one (1) year of directly related experience, or equivalency.

($28.15 - $36.36 per hour)
This position is also eligible to receive:
55th to 57th parallels retention allowance: Eligible employees (salary, temporary salary, contract of employment) who work and reside in locations between the 55th and 57th parallels (excluding those eligible for the Fort McMurray Allowance) shall be paid an annual retention bonus of $6,000.00, less all lawful deductions.

Notes:
• Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time)
• Work schedule runs Monday to Friday
• Extended working hours (overtime) and/or travel will be required to complete assigned field work
• Overtime rate will be applicable for all overtime
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required
• Ability to work under varying site conditions including inclement weather conditions and wet surface areas/environments
• PPE will be provided
• A fleet vehicle will be provided
• In house training will be provided
• Any relocation costs are the responsibility of the successful candidate.
• Candidate must reside within the geographical boundaries of the assigned regional work area and within a reasonable distance (~60 km) from their assigned office
• Office is located in the geographical region where the successful candidate will reside (i.e. Fort Vermillion)
• Candidate will be required to travel to La Crete on a regular basis to perform inspection duties.
• Candidate may be required to travel to other geographical regions for training and/or cover off for other regions
