The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime, including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Security, you will direct the overall custodial services for the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre. In this position you will be responsible for the inspection of janitorial work carried out by inmates at the correctional centre; ensuring hygienic conditions of the centre are met. As the Caretaker Supervisor, you will also provide supervision and training of approximately 25 inmates and one staff on performing janitorial tasks.

The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring sufficient inmate labour is assigned to perform all custodial tasks.
  • Ensuring the inmate labour who carry out the janitorial duties, perform and maintain them at a hygienic standard set out by the centre.
  • Scheduling major cleaning of the centre throughout the year, which includes vents, walls and ceilings.
  • Coordinating the inmate labour to areas of the centre in order to meet the cleaning workload.
  • Responsible for the supervision of Caretaker 1-2 staff, while providing the appropriate assignment of duties.  
  • Performing hands-on training for custodial duties to the inmate labour crew as required.
  • Required to drive a Government vehicle on Centre property to attend various areas within Centre, in order to assist and oversee loading and proper disposal of waste.
  • Maintaining, controlling and ensuring cleaning supplies are available at all times.
  • Maintaining and ensuring all janitorial equipment is fully operational and in safe condition, scheduling regular maintenance and servicing.
  • Preparing budget submission estimates for new or replacement equipment annually.

Qualifications

Required:
Some high school education plus three years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of one (1) year of related education for one (1) year of experience; or one (1) year of experience for one (1) year of related education.

Special Requirement:  

Physically able to lift and handle the caretaking equipment associated with position assignment.

The following will be considered assets:

  • Previous or current experience with cleaning solutions and chemicals used in performing Janitorial work.
  • Previous or Current experience with the operation of various janitorial equipment.
  • Current WHIMIS certificate.
  • Previous supervisory experience will be considered an asset.

This posting will be used to fill one permanent full-time position at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre - 7802-101 Street, Fort Saskatchewan, AB.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week (full-time). As the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre is a 24/7 operation, successful candidates will be required to work a shift rotation including days, afternoons and nights.

Final candidates will be required to provide a Fingerprint Based Criminal Record Check. Any associated costs will be your responsibility and you are only required to provide this check if requested. We cannot accept on-line Criminal Record Checks, from a non-Policing Agency.
