Role Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the Wildfire Prevention Officer role for our Fort McMurray office. As the Wildfire Prevention Officer, you will liaise as a member of the Wildfire Prevention group while providing leadership to the Prevention section.
Reporting to the Forest Area Manager, you are responsible for the planning, budgeting, coordination and delivery of all elements of the wildfire prevention program in the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Overseeing programs intended to influence change in individual and societal behavior to meet the prevention program goals. These goals include reducing the wildfire risk; thereby protecting human lives, communities, watersheds, natural resources and infrastructure.
You will be working in conjunction with other departments and major stakeholders in order to meet these goals. You will provide leadership to staff to develop cooperative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and leads the prevention section to implement the Provincial and Area prevention goals. Expected to participate in provincial level planning initiatives, policy, standard operating procedures, guidelines, business rules and operating manual development and review. As a senior supervisor, you would also participate in wildfire suppression and pre-suppression in varying supervisory roles.

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standard
University degree in Forestry, Natural Resources or a related discipline plus four (4) years of related experience in fire suppression, fire prevention, land management planning and operations or a two-year diploma plus six (6) years of related experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience is considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience or vice versa.
Additional requirement includes: A valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent.
Assets:
- Knowledge of Provincial legislation including the Forest and Prairie Protection Act, Forests Act and Timber Management Regulations, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Regulated Forest Management Profession Act and Public Lands Administration Regulation.
- Supervisory or leadership experience.
- Peace Officer status and training.
- Eligibility for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals.
- Advanced Wildland Fire Behaviour training and Duty Officer Experience.

Notes
Wildfire Prevention Officer is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evenings and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.
Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
