Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Regional Wildlife Manager, this position is accountable for the design, development, delivery and management of wildlife and wildlife habitat programs in Northeastern Alberta area.  This includes, monitoring, allocation and conservation initiatives for game, non-game and species at risk. This will involve:

•    Working  with the Public, First Nations and Metis, local and regional governments, NGOs, scientific institutes and industry.
•    Developing resource management approaches and solutions to resolve wildlife conflicts related to land use.
•    Developing and implementing inventory or monitoring plans for game, non-game and species at risk in the Fort McMurray area.
•    Utilizing your strong analytical skills to analyze data and make management recommendations.
•    Providing strong professional support, leadership, advice and direction to various provincial level tasks, strategies, and policies.

Qualifications

Requirements:
•    University degree in Wildlife Sciences, Biology, Conservation Sciences or a related field.
•    A minimum of 6 years related experience in areas such as wildlife and land use management, research, population modelling and habitat monitoring, as well as stakeholder consultation.
•    Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

Equivalencies:
•    Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:
•    Completion of a post-graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in a related field such as Wildlife Management.
•    Significant analytical experience, particularly with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
•    Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
•    Strong inter- and intrapersonal skills, including communicating (verbal, written) complex topics to various audiences.
•    Significant experience in design, coordination, and delivery of wildlife surveys in rotary and/or fixed-wing aircraft.
•    Broad working knowledge of a wide range of legislation that guides and influences wildlife management including but not limited to: the Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Forest Act, Municipal Government Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act, Resource and Energy Development Act, and their associated regulations and guidelines, as well as knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS. 
•    Ability to operate a wide range of equipment and machinery including but not limited to: OHV’s, snowmobiles, and 4X4 trucks.

Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday

This is a full-time permanent position that will be located in Fort McMurray.

Working and Living in Fort McMurray: 
•    Attraction Bonus: The attraction bonus is a one-time payment that is equivalent to 25% of base pay (bi-weekly pay X 26.1 X 25%) upon commencement, less all lawful deductions. The attraction bonus is paid on a quarterly basis over the first year of employment. 
•    Fort McMurray Allowance: The Fort McMurray Allowance provides eligible employees with $478.17 for each bi-weekly pay period served in addition to their regular earnings. The allowance is non-pensionable compensation.
