Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled forest professional to conduct and oversee the operations compliance and monitoring aspects of forest management. This role involves field work as required under the Alberta Forest Operations Monitoring Program (FOMP) and associated administrative functions. The FOMP Specialist will guide and assist Forest Area staff in forest operations monitoring and other timber management activities, engage with various stakeholders, and ensure adherence to legislation, policies and ground rules. Key responsibilities include leading the FOMP program and the Timber Revenue and Production Monitoring program, conducting quality assessments, and ensuring sustainable forest practices. Other Responsibilities:

  • Provide team leadership in the delivery of the Provincial Forest Operations Monitoring Program (FOMP) in accordance with the FOMP Policy and Quality Objectives, FOMP Quality Manual, Quality Management Principles, Quality Management System, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide Area team leadership in the delivery of Timber Revenue and Production Monitoring program.
  • Provide team leadership in the delivery of Reforestation Monitoring – Reforestation Standards of Alberta (RSA).
  • Provide support to the wildfire management program as required.
  • Participate in issue management activities as required.
  • Assist in the field monitoring and identification of forest insects and disease as requested by Forest Health Officer.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in Forestry or a related Natural Resource Management field plus a minimum of 2 years related and current experience will be considered or a 2 year diploma in Forestry or a related Natural Resources Management field plus four years of related and current experience.
  • Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

 

Assets:

  • Certified timber scaler with a valid scaler’s permit.
  • Working knowledge of Avenza Maps mobile application.
  • Experience with the Alberta RSA compiler program.
  • Forest harvesting and reclamation operations experience.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS.
  • Experience with forestry field surveys in general.
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta timber harvest planning and operating ground rules.
  • Wildfire operations experience.

 

Additional Requirement:

  • Membership or eligibility for membership with the Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. 

 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
