Role Responsibilities
Join our team as a Wildlife Biologist, where you will play a key role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of wildlife populations and habitats. Reporting to the Senior Wildlife Biologist, you will work independently to manage wildlife resources, conduct surveys, analyze data, and contribute to policy development. You’ll also collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, industry, and the public, to address complex land-use and conservation challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute wildlife management plans, conduct surveys, analyze data, and make recommendations to enhance wildlife conservation.
- Implement and monitor species inventory programs, develop harvest allocation recommendations, and contribute to species management and recovery plans.
- Assess and mitigate impacts on wildlife habitats, participate in land management decisions, and offer expert advice on habitat restoration.
- Identify research needs, design, and lead scientific studies, and prepare technical reports to advance our understanding of wildlife dynamics.
- Educate the public and stakeholders about wildlife issues, design public consultation processes, and maintain media relations.
- Manage budgets, ensure compliance with financial policies, and oversee the operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Guide and evaluate technical, wage, and contract staff, ensuring effective team performance and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications
Required:
• A degree in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Environment Sciences, Conservation Biology or a related field.
• 4 years of directly related experience in wildlife management, conservation, habitat assessment or a related field.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
• A related two-year diploma plus 6 years related experience.
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.
Assets:
• Familiarity with wildlife databases, GIS software, spatial analysis, and other relevant tools.
• Familiarity with provincial and federal wildlife management policies and legislation.
• Familiarity with OH&S legislation, policies, and procedures.
• Experience in managing wildlife programs or achieving project outcomes.
Candidates who do not yet meet all the qualifications may be considered for a position at a lower classification level, with the opportunity to advance to the higher classification once all criteria are fully met.

Notes
We are currently hiring for one full-time permanent position and two temporary positions: one for a duration of 12 months and the other for 18 months. The standard work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM, totaling 36.25 hours per week.
The full-time permanent position will be based in Edson, while the temporary positions may be located in Edson or alternative offices within the Northwest Region (Grande Prairie, Peace River, Whitecourt, Slave Lake). This competition may also be used to fill future vacancies across the Government of Alberta at similar or lower classifications and salary levels.
