Role Responsibilities

As a Forest Officer, you will support the delivery of Alberta’s Forestry Operations Programs and report to a Wildfire Technologist. This position plays a critical role in wildfire prevention, preparedness, and response, as well as forest management operations and forest stewardship. All activities must be conducted in compliance with Alberta legislation, policies, procedures, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.

 

This role provides the opportunity to apply knowledge of wildfire behaviour, fuel types, forest ecology, and wildland firefighting techniques to support safe, efficient, and effective wildfire operations. Responsibilities include participation in wildfire detection, enforcement, public education, engineering, pre-suppression, and suppression activities, in alignment with provincial standards and operational plans.

 

The Forest Officer is also required to actively participate in the monitoring of forest operations related to Forest Management activities across the Edson Forest Area. This includes conducting forest operations inspections, scaling, reforestation surveys, and enforcement-related investigations.

 

Maintaining accurate documentation, reports, and records related to wildfire and forest management activities is an essential component of this role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
A  two-year diploma in Forestry or a related Natural Resource Management field plus three (3) years of directly related forestry or wildfire experience.

 

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:
 - One year of experience for one year of education or
 - One year of education for one year of experience.

 

Requirement:

 

  • Must be eligible for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals.

 

Assets:

 

  • Supervisory or leadership experience.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role, with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. Due to the emergency response requirements associated with wildfires, flexibility to work overtime, evenings, and weekends is required. Positions are available in Edson and Hinton.

 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
