Role Responsibilities

Do you excel at resolving conflict, building trust and navigating sensitive issues with empathy and professionalism?

As the Senior Resolution Specialist for the Police Review Commission (PRC), you will take a lead role in managing complex complaints and facilitating ADR processes such as mediation, healing circles, and facilitated discussions. You will mentor junior resolution staff, and provide guidance on case strategies, and help ensure consistent, high-quality approaches across the resolution team.

Key areas that will make you successful in this role:

•    Complaint Assessment – Review complex files, determine jurisdiction, analyze patterns, and recommend resolution strategies.
•    Resolution Leadership – Facilitate ADR processes such as mediation and healing circles, leading the most sensitive or high-risk cases.
•    Mentorship & Training – Guide junior staff, provide training in ADR practices, and promote consistency across the resolution team.
•    Service Excellence – Apply advanced trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practices to address conflict and support fair outcomes.
•    Collaboration – Partner with investigators, legal counsel, and case coordinators to resolve files efficiently and transparently.
•    Reporting & Recommendations – Prepare resolution reports and recommend next steps to decision-making committees or management.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Senior Resolution Specialist (PS4MA):

Undergraduate degree in a related field (Criminology, Law and Society, Police Studies, Sociology, etc.), supplemented by four (4) years related experience.

Directly related education or experience will be considered on the basis of: 

•    1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
•    1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Resolution Specialist (PS3MA):

Undergraduate degree in a related field (Criminology, Law and Society, Police Studies, Sociology, etc.), plus a minimum of two (2) years of related experience

Directly related education or experience will be considered on the basis of: 

•    1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
•    1 year of experience for 1 year of education

The following will be considered assets for both roles:

•    Experience with conflict resolution strategies and trauma-informed approaches to ensure a fair and supportive complaint resolution process.  
•    Experience facilitating alternative and traditional dispute resolution approaches. 
•    Previous experience working with law enforcement agencies.
•    Understanding of the Police Act and regulations, policing policies and procedures, and related provincial and federal legislation, along with a demonstrated understanding of police duties and responsibilities.
•    Experience working with Indigenous and diverse communities.  
•    Experience interpreting and applying policies and procedures within a resolution framework, ensuring compliance with established guidelines.

Technical Competencies:

•    Foundational experience in alternative dispute resolution methods. 
•    Some experience navigating emotionally charged situations to guide parties toward voluntary resolutions. 
•    Demonstrated ability to support and communicate effectively with individuals experiencing mental illness, cognitive or physical impairments, and those in personal crisis. 
•     Strong written communication skills to write experience writing comprehensive reports, coordinate investigative briefings with the ability to tailor content to different audiences.  
•    Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high attention to detail.

Other Requirements:
 
•    Must be able to pass and maintain a fingerprint-based criminal records check, police information check, and other clearances required to access police databases.
•    Class 5 driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract; travel within Alberta required.
