This position resides in the Ministry of Health under the Acute Care Division, within the Acute Care Branch.

Role Responsibilities

Manager, Acute Care Standards

The Acute Care Standards (ACS) Manager in the Acute Care Division leads a team focused on informing government policy decisions regarding acute care through research, analysis, and reporting. Key responsibilities include:
 

  • Information, Analysis, and Advice: Develop and present standards through research and data analysis.
  • Project Management: Oversee project plans for strategic policy initiatives.
  • Content Development: Tailor content for standards development for different audiences.
  • Leadership and Accountability: Lead strategic priorities through the decision-making process.
  • Issues Management: Proactively manage policy and standards issues.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Support planning, development, and delivery of initiatives.


The manager will lead strategic initiatives to improve province-wide acute care delivery, including performance standards, policy development, and legislative implementation. They will also promote acute care within the Ministry, collaborate with other divisions, and provide leadership and guidance to staff. Additionally, the role involves developing briefing materials, offering consulting advice to the Minister, and managing public messaging and issues related to acute care standards.

Manager, Surgery

The Manager of Surgery will lead a team within the Acute Care - Surgery and Surgical Policy Unit, focusing on improving surgical access and services across Alberta. Key responsibilities include:
 

  • Leading the development and implementation of surgical care policies and strategies, aligning them with government priorities.
  • Collaborating with major health system stakeholders, including Alberta Health Services, to improve patient outcomes, reduce variability, and enhance surgery service delivery.
  • Providing high-quality, timely advice to the Ministry, the Minister’s Office, and other stakeholders on surgical policy and issues.
  • Managing projects to reduce surgical wait times, expand surgical capacity, and improve efficiency across hospitals and chartered surgical facilities.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to support the Alberta Surgical Initiative and enhance collaborative efforts for improving surgical services.


The role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to coordinate initiatives across the healthcare system.

Role Responsibilities

Manager, Acute Care Policy

The Manager, Acute Care Policy, will play a pivotal role in managing and coordinating the policy portfolio for improving healthcare access and delivery across Alberta's hospitals. This role requires leadership, expertise, and collaboration with key stakeholders to advance the Ministry's commitments for acute care and ensure effective system operations.

Leadership and Policy Development:

•    Lead research, policy, and strategy development in alignment with the Ministry's acute care health and business priorities.
•    Coordinate the development and implementation of a framework for acute care policy, collaborating with Alberta Health Services and other partners.
•    Lead efforts to improve provincial wait times and capacity planning, ensuring policies reflect current trends, innovations, and models of care.

Stakeholder Management and Communications:

•    Build and sustain strategic networks with internal and external stakeholders to inform policy advice and strategy.
•    Support the development of communication materials, including Ministerial correspondence, to keep stakeholders informed on key issues.
•    Coordinate proactive issues management processes to address emerging challenges.

Policy Oversight and Analysis:

•    Oversee policy and legislative reviews, ensuring integration of health standards, evidence-based practices, and quality initiatives into policy.
•    Provide consultation and expert advice on acute care policy to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment with government priorities.

Operational Leadership:

•    Manage day-to-day operations of the Unit, including supporting team development, cross-training, and fostering professional growth.
•    Support budget activities and lead planning, coordination, and integration efforts to advance Unit goals.
•    Act on behalf of the Director and senior management during their absences, ensuring continuity of operations.

Qualifications

Manager, Acute Care Standards

University graduation in a field related to the position assignment (Public Administration, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field), supplemented by four (4) years related experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Required Experience:
 

  • Strong understanding of government structure, legislative frameworks, and the application of legislation within the Alberta healthcare system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare providers and their roles within the system.
  • Proven experience in policy development and navigating multi-stakeholder environments.
  • In-depth understanding of health system priorities, acute care service delivery, and the political and economic issues affecting healthcare delivery.
