Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Wildfire Response, this position is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, coordination, and professional delivery of the wildfire review and improvement program in Alberta. As a subject matter expert in Wildfire Management policies, standard operating procedures and business rules the role supports Division, Area, and Ministry representatives in the development, implementation, and interpretation of policies, standard operating procedures and associated complex issues.

 

The position also leads the Internal Review program, ensuring operational information from Areas and headquarters—including the Alberta Wildfire Coordination Centre (AWCC)—is reviewed and assessed for consistency and compliance with wildfire management policies and procedures. Oversight of the Fire Information Resource System (FIRES) is a key component including identifying and implementing updates to associated business rules and data. The successful candidate will provide strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership on complex and emerging internal review issues. This role also serves as the primary point of contact for the Office of the Auditor General in relation to external operating reviews.

 

Operating with a high degree of independence and accountability, the position requires advanced knowledge of wildfire and emergency response practices, as well as familiarity with human resource and financial processes. The role will liaise with multiple Directors and Executive Directors to support standard operating procedures and business rule integration across ministry programs, and to deliver actionable outcomes from internal reviews and audit findings.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard: A related degree plus 4 years related experience in Wildfire Management. 

 

Equivalency:  A related two-year diploma plus 6 years related experience. Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education.

 

Assets:

  • Strong knowledge of wildfire management standard operating procedures and business rules and good understanding of legislation and regulations that govern the ministry of Forestry and Parks. 
  • Strong knowledge of decision support tools utilized in wildfire such as the FIRES program. 
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, business, legislative, and policy development process.

 

Additional Requirement:
•    Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The preferred location is Edmonton, but remote or other locations may also be considered. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.

 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders. 

 

Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
