Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Wetlands Team Lead, the Wetland Valuation Tool Technician supports wetland assessments across the province and provides services to stakeholders requesting a wetland value determination to meet the requirements of the Alberta Wetland Policy.
Key Responsibilities:
- This position is a front-line position responsible for supporting and managing the Alberta Wetland Rapid Evaluation Tool - Actual (ABWRET-A) and Alberta Wetland Rapid Evaluation Tool – Desktop (ABWRET-D) submissions required by the Alberta Wetland Policy.
- This position ensures ABWRET submissions are processed in a consistent and timely manner and comply with the requirements of the Alberta Wetland Policy and associated directives and guidelines.
- ABWRET tools are used to determine the relative functions of a wetland which impacts regulatory requirements under the Water Act and determines the wetland replacement an applicant owes to permanently impact a wetland.
Other Skills:
- Must have a strong understanding of the Alberta Wetland Policy and its supporting tools and documents, as well as working knowledge of the Water Act, Public Lands Act, and provincial environmental regulatory processes.
- Requires basic skills and knowledge of GIS and ArcMap software, air photo wetland interpretation methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills are necessary to work with stakeholders and clients, request submission corrections, and respond to general inquiries on the wetland policy and wetland inventories and assessment tools.
- Ability to work effectively and independently.

Qualifications
Required:
- Two-year technical diploma in Environmental sciences or a related field plus four years related field experience in Freshwater or Wetlands system; or equivalent as described below.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to present and prepare written information to various stakeholders.
- Working experience in Microsoft office tools, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ArcMap software, air photo wetland interpretation methodologies (wetland delineation and classification).
Equivalency:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year education.
Skills, Abilities and other assets:
- Excellent communication skills are necessary to work with stakeholders, request submission corrections, and respond to general enquiries on the wetland policy and wetland inventories and assessment tools.
- Excellent organization skills, particularly in data and records keeping.
- Strong team working skills.
