The Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) plays a key role in managing the water within the province and is responsible for over $9 billion of water management infrastructure. Provincial infrastructure management includes operations and maintenance activities, planning and rehabilitation, and dam safety. Within the Operations Infrastructure Branch, the Water Projects Management Team is responsible for providing the technical support required to manage, operate and rehabilitate the province’s water management infrastructure.

Role Responsibilities

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has an exciting opportunity for a professional engineer to join the Water Projects Management team. 

Reporting to the Manager, Water Projects Management, this position is one of a team of 6 professionals that provides geotechnical and hydrotechnical engineering support for water management infrastructure located throughout Alberta. This position provides technical support, design review, project management, trouble shooting, operational analyses and advice as required, for the inspection, planning, design, rehabilitation and operation of provincial infrastructure. Expertise in geotechnical or hydrotechnical engineering related to water management infrastructure (especially dams and canals) is desired.

This position supports the larger Water Infrastructure Operations Branch (WIOB) and the important role they play in the management of water in the province. The successful candidate will contribute to the team while enhancing their geotechnical or hydrotechnical engineering skills related to water management infrastructure.

Responsibilities: 
Some of the responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Inspecting and assisting in the identification of deficiencies in AGI owned Water Management Infrastructure and ensuring the performance requirements stated in the Department Business Plan are satisfied.
  • Managing consulting engineering studies for assessment of the infrastructure to investigate an identify deficiencies in existing infrastructure.
  • Preparing Project Implementation Reports (PIR) for rehabilitation and repair of the infrastructure based on investigation reports, studies, and inspections.
  • Representing WIOB on project implementation teams with other GoA departments and consultants, and providing technical review of designs, reports, drawings, and tender documents for the projects.
  • Providing standards and guidance on departmental requirements for the projects and providing civil engineering expertise to the WPM team.
  • Providing technical support to WIOB operations staff regarding Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance (OM&S) of the infrastructure to ensure that the deficiencies are identified, and risks are managed.
  • Working as a member of multi-disciplinary teams to accomplish departmental goals.


This position will require travel throughout the province to support WIOB’s mandate.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • University degree in Civil Engineering with advanced courses in geotechnical or hydro technical engineering. 
  • Five years of related experience in the design, construction, and operation of water management structures such as dams, irrigation canals, and flood control structures. 
  • Professional membership with APEGA or eligibility for membership.


Equivalencies: 
Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:

  • P.Eng designation. 
  • Experience in project management.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Water Act and regulations.
  • Strong supervision and interpersonal skills while working with in-house engineering technologists, branch staff, and multi-disciplinary consultant teams.


**Candidates that do not meet Engineering and Related Level 2 qualifications may be offered a position at an Engineering and Related Level 1 classification.

Notes

Term of Employment: Up to two permanent full-time positions.

Hours of Work:  Monday to Friday / 36.25 hours per week.
(Evening and weekend work is sometimes required)  

Location: Edmonton 

This position will require travel throughout the province to support WIOB’s mandate.

A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required or this position, with a clear Driver’s Abstract.
Final candidates may be required to undergo a security screening.
