The Water and Circular Economy Division is responsible for overall integration of Environment and Protected Areas’ water and waste policies in Alberta, including regulatory and policy system coordination. This division supports implementation of the department's legislation and associated regulations and policies, assures that regulatory processes continue to steward and protect water resources, reduces unproductive regulatory burdens, and provides the necessary policy framework for operational and management excellence.
Role Responsibilities
Are you passionate about shaping water policy to support environmental, social, and economic outcomes? The Government of Alberta is seeking a skilled Water Policy Analyst to help coordinate and develop integrated water quality policies that guide the province’s environmental strategy.
As a Water Policy Analyst you will work across departments, other governments, and key stakeholders to research, design, and evaluate water policies. You will analyze complex issues, prepare recommendations for senior officials, and support legislation and program development focused on water quality, quantity, groundwater, and watershed management.
Key Responsibilities:
• Research and analyze water policy issues to support informed decision-making.
• Develop and evaluate policy options and legislative recommendations.
• Collaborate with internal teams, regulators, and other jurisdictions to align policies.
• Support communication, education, and awareness efforts around water policies.
• Provide policy support for inter-departmental initiatives and strategic planning.

Qualifications
Required:
University degree (4 years) in environmental policy, public administration, natural resource management, or a related field a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience.
Equivalencies considered:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
• Experience working with Indigenous communities or incorporating Indigenous knowledge into environmental or water policy development.
• Demonstrated familiarity with intergovernmental processes, including collaboration at the federal-provincial or interjurisdictional level.
• Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and facilitation, particularly in complex, multi-interest policy environments.
• Knowledge of watershed planning frameworks or principles of integrated water resource management (IWRM).
• Proficiency in using data visualization tools or GIS software to support environmental policy analysis and decision-making.

• This competition is for 1 permanent full time position located in downtown, Edmonton. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies within the team.
