Water Monitoring Regional Supervisor

Role Responsibilities

As a Water Monitoring Regional Supervisor, you will play a key leadership role in Alberta’s environmental monitoring efforts by overseeing the delivery of Surface and Ground water quantity, water quality, and meteorological data collection programs within a designated region. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Provincial Water Monitoring, you will be responsible for supervising a team of technical staff, managing field operations, maintaining program and safety standards, and ensuring timely, high-quality data collection that supports both routine water management and emergency response across the province.

This position is critical to protecting Alberta’s water resources and public safety, particularly during floods, droughts, and environmental emergencies. It also supports collaboration with multiple levels of government, industry, academia, and non-governmental organizations.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Supervise and support a regional team of water monitoring technologists.
•    Plan, schedule and manage regional monitoring programs and field activities.
•    Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and safe work procedures.
•    Oversee the maintenance and use of facilities, vehicles and monitoring equipment.
•    Ensure data collection meets provincial quality assurance standards.
•    Provide real-time data support during environmental emergencies (for example - floods, spills, droughts).
•    Collaborate with internal and external partners to coordinate projects and data sharing.
•    Mentor staff and provide technical expertise across disciplines.

Qualifications

Requirements

Education:
Two-year technical diploma in Biological, Environmental, or Water Sciences or a related field.

Experience:
Minimum of (7) years of progressively responsible experience in water quantity and quality monitoring, including:

• Hydrometric, groundwater, and meteorological data collection and analysis.
• Supervising or leading teams of technical or professional staff.

Other:

• A Valid Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent).
• A recent driver's abstract with a clean driving record.
• Occupational Health & Safety Certifications.
• Willingness and physical ability to travel and perform demanding fieldwork in remote locations and varying weather conditions.
• Knows how to swim.

Equivalency:

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Assets:

• Experience in environmental emergency response (e.g. floods, droughts, toxic spills), including familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS).
• Project management expertise, including planning, budgeting and oversight of field -based environmental monitoring projects.
• Proficiency with environmental monitoring software and database, including QA/QC tools, data entry systems, or telemetry-based platforms.
• Advanced technical training or certification in hydrometrics, water chemistry, limnology, groundwater monitoring or related disciplines.

Notes

This competition is open to fill four (4) full-time Water Monitoring Regional Supervisor positions, including three (3) permanent roles based in Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and Lethbridge, and one (1) temporary position in Calgary to cover an 18-month maternity leave. The work schedule is 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Work Conditions:
This role involves a mix of office work and frequent fieldwork in remote locations and varying weather conditions. Field duties may require travel, overnight stays, and physically demanding tasks, including walking, skiing, hiking, and operating ATVs, boats, snowmobiles, and trailers to access monitoring locations. Helicopter travel to sites will be needed in some cases.

The position includes on-call availability for emergency response and must follow all Occupational Health & Safety and emergency protocols.
