The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime, including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

The Training Academy (TA) is offering an exciting Training Instructor opportunity!

Reporting to the Training Sergeant, the Training Instructor is responsible for the delivery of induction training to a variety of stakeholders including Community Peace Officers, Correctional Peace Officers, and Sheriffs. Other duties include preparing for each training session, delivering classroom, practical and high-fidelity reality-based scenario training, providing feedback and evaluating recruit performance, and collaborating with curriculum designers on changes and improvements to course materials by providing subject matter expertise and evidence-based content. 

Our Training Instructors:
- understand and champion the TA mandate, vision, and mission.
- contribute to the shift from a focus on technical/tactical training to a holistic training program that recognizes the importance of both technical/tactical and human connection skills in law enforcement.
- work as part of a team in delivering induction training.
- deliver training to frontline staff (Peace Officers, Sheriffs, Correctional Peace Officers) to ensure they have the skills, knowledge and certification to provide quality, professional services.
- use creativity and innovation to address different learning needs.
- engage adult learners to maximize comprehension, knowledge retention, and skill transfer to the field environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard:
University graduation in a related field, such a Criminal Justice/Criminology, Policing/Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, Business, etc.; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalencies:
Directly related experience or education considered based on 1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.

Experience that will be considered as related:
-    Correctional Officer – federal, provincial, or territorial
-    Community Peace Officer
-    Special Constable
-    Sheriff
-    Conservation Officer
-    Fish & Wildlife Officer
-    Police officer

Completion of a law enforcement induction training program from a recognized institution or agency (Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services Training Academy, Ontario Police College, Edmonton Police Service, etc.) is required.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working as a Canadian law enforcement officer on a full-time basis.

The following will be considered assets:
- Current Training Academy or related instructor qualifications (Essential Facilitations, Control Tactics, Firearms, EVOC, First Aid, etc.).
-    Experience delivering training in a law enforcement training environment.
-    Experience in leadership roles/initiatives (Peer Support Program, Field Training Officer, etc).
-    Formal training, education and experience instructing using adult learning principles.
-    Experience contributing to workplace culture through special projects and initiatives.

Notes

The Training Academy has 6 temporary positions available.

Hours of work: 8:15AM - 4:30PM, Monday to Friday (36.25 hours/week)

Applicants may be required to complete a presentation, writing assignment, and physical fitness test.

Occasional evening and weekend hours work is required, as well as travel within the province.
