As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manage public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about sustainable forest management and making a meaningful impact on Alberta's natural resources? Join a team dedicated to ensuring the responsible stewardship of Crown timber resources across the province. As a Timber Production Auditor, you will play a critical role in monitoring timber harvesting activities, promoting compliance with forestry legislation, and supporting the long-term sustainability of Alberta's forests.

 

Reporting to the Unit Head, Timber Auditing Unit, the Timber Production Auditor conducts audits of timber companies operating under Timber Quotas and Forest Management Agreements to ensure timber production is accurately reported and managed in accordance with provincial standards. This role combines auditing, compliance assurance, policy development, and technical expertise to support sustainable forest management practices across Alberta. The position also serves as a key resource for departmental staff and contributes to wildfire response efforts when required.

 

Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting audits of timber companies to verify timber production levels and ensure compliance with timber production monitoring requirements.

• Reviewing timber production records, identifying variances, and resolving discrepancies with industry representatives.

• Supporting the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Timber Production Monitoring Framework.

• Assisting in establishing and refining measurable standards for timber production reporting across various tenure types and mill operations.

• Providing expert advice on timber production monitoring, auditing practices, and compliance requirements.

• Guiding field staff during investigations involving suspected non-compliance with forestry legislation.

• Evaluating timber production information to support sustainable forest management objectives and departmental priorities.

• Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to promote consistent application of provincial standards and reporting requirements.

• Assisting wildfire response operations to help protect Alberta's forests when required

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A 2-year diploma in Forest Technology or equivalent and 4 years related experience.

 

Equivalency: 

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:
one year of experience for one year of education or
one year of education for one year of experience.

 

Requirements:

  • Eligibility for registration as a Regulated Forestry Professional in Alberta
  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence.

 

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Alberta forestry legislation, policies, and timber tenure systems.
  • Valid Scaling permit.
  • Experience working with Timber Quotas, Forest Management Agreements, or timber production reporting systems.
  • Experience developing audit methodologies, monitoring frameworks, or compliance standards.
  • Experience providing technical guidance or training to staff and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of GIS, data management systems, or audit-related software.
  • Experience supporting emergency response or wildfire management operations.

Notes

This is a temporary, full-time wage position for 36.25 hours a week, Monday to Friday, with an estimated end date of March 31, 2027. The successful candidate may be required to work overtime to support operational requirements, including periods of increased wildfire activity.
