The Metis Settlements Appeal Tribunal (MSAT) is an operationally independent, quasi-judicial agency whose overriding consideration is to preserve and enhance Métis culture and identity, and to strengthen Métis self-governance under the laws of Alberta. As a legislated alternative to court, MSAT strives to resolve disputes through adjudication, mediation and education in a manner that is fair, timely and cost-effective. MSAT is viewed as a credible, fair and effective dispute resolution body for resolving disputes on the Metis Settlements. Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Tribunal Secretary/Director, you will develop and maintain the information management system for MSAT, including development and maintenance of MSAT’s “Access” information framework. You will also provide research and investigative support for the MSAT team to prepare for meetings in the Metis Settlements, hearings and reporting processes. You will play a key role in communicating with affected parties within the Metis Settlements, MSAT staff and Tribunal Board members to schedule meetings and hearings in a timely manner. In this position you will maintain detailed files, compile statistics for quarterly and annual reports, summarize Alberta Court of Appeal decisions and prepare correspondence in relation to Appeal Tribunal proceedings.
Your excellent oral and written communication skills, multi-tasking skills, research and analytical skills, and good interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders will ensure your success in this position.
You will need to possess strong organization skills, an ability to work independently, be detailed-oriented and be a strong team player.
Community outreach plays an important role in the Appeal Tribunal’s dispute resolution activities. By going out to the Metis Settlements and meeting with Settlement members and elected officials, the Appeal Tribunal ensures that those who rely on its services have a better understanding of its functions and processes. You will be a part of this outreach and travel to the communities to assist MSAT staf in providing presentations to settlement members, schools and Settlement Councils.

Qualifications
University degree in a related field; no experience; or 2-year Diploma in a related field with 2 years of progressively responsible experience required. Equivalencies of directly related education or experiences on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education will be considered.
You will have:
- Comprehensive computer skills including internet research, Microsoft Office applications including Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Strong communication and written skills.
Preferences:
- Knowledge of the Metis Settlemement Act, Metis Settlements General Council policies, Metis Settlements Land Registry Regulations, Settlement bylaws and all related legislation;
- Knowledge of the Metis Settlements governance and administrative structures.
- Experience working with Metis Settlements.
Assets:
- Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously.
- Knowledge of the Metis Settlements Appeal Tribunal and its services.
- Experience in presentation/facilitation or public speaking.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
