Wage (casual) employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings, in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.

 

Summer students are offered wage positions for a period of two to four months in duration. Number of hours of work per week is 36.25 hours.

 

Final candidates may be required to undergo security screening to be hired into a summer student opportunity.

 

The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the Act. The Commission is an independent Commission created by the Government of Alberta. It has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, through the resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and through human rights tribunal and court hearings.

Role Responsibilities

The Alberta Human Rights Commission is hiring two summer law students to aid the Director and legal counsels with their work including writing draft decisions, researching and writing legal opinions, assisting with drafting legal briefs, and attending tribunal dispute resolution meetings and hearings.

 

We are looking for people who have:

  • an understanding of the Alberta Human Rights Act and human rights principles
  • experience working with diverse communities, including lived experience. E.g. people with mental or physical disabilities, racialized communities, Indigenous people, LGBTQ2SI+ people, people with lower socio-economic
  • status and other marginalized groups
  • experience interpreting and applying legislation to unique situations
  • experience in legal research and writing
  • experience in administrative investigations, or mediations

Qualifications

Requirements:

Students must be enrolled in Law School and must be available to work full-time from May 1, 2026, to August 29, 2026. Ideal candidates will have excellent written and oral communication skills along with legal research, technological proficiency (including with Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) applications), and writing experience.
