Role Responsibilities

The Strategic Accommodations Planner works under the direction of the Manager for Accommodations and is responsible for coordinating, planning, and overseeing the accommodation needs for all programs in various facilities throughout the province for the Ministry of Education and Childcare. This position delivers services through effective collaboration and coordination with unit staff, client business areas, other government departments, and numerous vendors and contractors. All activities are performed in compliance with relevant regulations, guidelines, and policies, while exercising sound judgment and aligning project priorities with the department’s strategic business plan and goals.
 

The Strategic Accommodations Planner manages and coordinates accommodation projects, including office relocations, facility renovations and the implementation of both short-term and long-term accommodation planning strategies. The incumbent investigates accommodation issues, develops options, and provides informed recommendations to support decision-making.
 

In addition, this position provides backup support to the Manager as required and serves as the Lead WAAC (Wireless Account Authorization Coordinator) for all mobile needs for the department. This position also provides backup coverage to other team members in areas such as parking administration, surplus coordination, RMI, and other smaller accommodation-related projects.

 

Responsibilities include:

  1. Accommodation planning - Receive and assess accommodation requests, determining legitimacy and urgency while aligning with departmental and program priorities.
  2. Project Management - Coordinate implementation of approved construction and renovation projects, ensuring requirements and timelines are met.
  3. Property management - Coordinate and process Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) property claims, including for furniture, property, and government vehicles.
  4. Furniture - Lead furniture-related projects, including selection, acquisition, and installation.
  5. Parking Administration - Administer parking assignments, issuing and retrieving all parking materials (passes, decals) upon initiation or termination of parking privileges.
  6. Ministry Lead WAAC (Wireless Account Authorization Coordinator) - Act as the primary coordinator for all mobile wireless products and services purchased by the ministry.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field such as Project Management or a related field plus two years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent as described below.

 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience is considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience or one year of experience for one year of education.

 

Assets:
- Experience related to project management, interior design, property management, functional space, planning, construction management and procurement.
- Knowledge of government wide policies, standards and procedures relating to accommodations, parking, furniture, leasing, space standards, ergonomics and RMI.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
- Well-developed analytical, decision-making, negotiation and time management abilities. 
- Proficient in Microsoft Office application (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Visio) and Adobe software.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License.

Notes

There is one (1) permanent full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

 

This position is based in Edmonton.

 

Some travel is required. The incumbent must be able to travel between sites within the downtown Edmonton core. Occasional travel to Calgary and other regional locations may be required to manage projects and address accommodation issues.

 

A valid class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle or another approved method of reliable travel are required.

 

Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
