The Hunting and Fishing Branch – promotes sustainable hunting, trapping, and angling opportunities for all Albertans using objective-based management of game and fish. The branch is responsibly for the management and allocation of Alberta’s fish and wildlife resources, including statutory decision making, engagement and consultations as well as policy surrounding the public, private and commercial uses of these resources.

Role Responsibilities

The Stakeholder Engagement and Grant Specialist provides strategic consultation, program coordination and stakeholder engagement to support the Hunting and Fishing Branch (HFB) and its grant programs. Reporting to the Executive Director and under the guidance of the Directors of Wildlife and Fish Allocation and Use, this role ensures effective representation of HFB initiatives, facilitates collaboration and contributes to policy development as well as implementation across wildlife, fisheries and licensing programs.

 

The position involves fostering relationships with diverse stakeholders including individual Albertans, conservation organizations, municipalities, First Nations, and other government departments. The specialist serves as the primary contact for grant administration, providing guidance, monitoring compliance, and supporting program delivery. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, knowledge of hunting and fishing legislation, and the ability to clearly explain government processes to stakeholders.

 

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Oversee grant programs, review deliverables, ensure compliance, and provide guidance to stakeholders and program directors.
  • Lead consultatations develop engagement strategies, coordinate meetings, and manage communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, facilitate collaboration, and represent HFB priorities in policy and program development.
  • Provide senior management with timely advice, prepare briefing materials, and support policy research, development, and implementation.
  • Plan and execute projects and public-facing events, monitor progress, manage deliverables, and ensure successful implementation.
  • Support wildlife and fisheries licensing administration, track emerging issues, maintain records, and ensure accurate reporting.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 4 years of progressively responsible related experience.

 

Equivalency: Relevant education and experience may be considered interchangeable on a one-to-one basis (1 year of education equals 1 year of experience and vice versa).

 

Assets:

  • Experience with fish and wildlife management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders and represent the Branch professionally.
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Experience in stakeholder-focused roles or grant administration.
  • Understanding of government operations, engagement processes, and political acumen.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, ministerial orders, and guidelines.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong project management experience with the ability to plan, execute, and monitor complex projects, think strategically, and manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to build, maintain, and facilitate relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and senior leadership; skilled in consulting, negotiating, and consensus-building.
  • Advanced writing, technical writing, and presentation skills; able to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of program and policy development, legislative processes, and evaluation techniques; strong analytical, research, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrates mature judgment, tact, and diplomacy; skilled in facilitation, conflict resolution, decision-making, and creative/critical thinking to generate solutions and support effective outcomes.

This is full-time temporary (2 years) position located in Edmonton. 

 

Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.
