As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for fostering Alberta’s environmentally responsible forest management practices, including management of wildfires.  We preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manage public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Role Responsibilities

Are you a hands-on mechanic who wants more than routine shop work? Join Alberta Wildfire and play a direct role in supporting frontline wildfire response across the province.

 

As a Small Engine Mechanic, you will ensure critical equipment—pumps, chainsaws, generators, and support units—is operational, reliable, and ready for deployment when Albertans need it most.

• Some examples of examples of type of equipment you’ll be working on are Waterax or equivalent wildfire pumps, Husqvarna chainsaws and Stihl brush saws as well as Honda/Yamaha generators

 

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain wildfire equipment (e.g., pumps, chainsaws, brush saws, generators)

• Perform preventative maintenance and operational readiness checks

• Service ATVs, trailers, and light-duty fleet equipment

• Provide field support through on-site/mobile repairs as required

• Complete work orders and document repairs, parts, and labor

• Assist with inventory management, including parts ordering and stock control

• Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient shop environment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma
  • Journeyman certification in Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, or related trade

 

Equivalency:

  • Significant hands-on experience in small engine repair (2- and 4-stroke) may be considered in lieu of formal certification

 

Assets:

  • Experience with wildfire or forestry equipment (e.g., water pumps, chainsaws)
  • Experience with 2-stroke and small engine diagnostics and repair
  • Experience in fleet readiness, inspections, or seasonal operations
  • Field or remote work experience

Notes

This is a temporary position with a 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday.

 

This position supports wildfire operations and requires flexibility. Candidates must be willing and able to:

  • Work overtime during peak wildfire activity
  • Travel and support remote field operations when required
