Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Wildfire Compliance and Investigations, the Senior Provincial Wildfire Compliance Program Lead (SPWCPL) is responsible for the coordination, development, and strategic implementation of Alberta’s wildfire compliance program.

 

Key responsibilities include:
•    Agreements: Establish and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders at the provincial, national, and international levels to support wildfire control agreements, plans, and resource sharing agreements.
•    Provincial Wildfire Prevention Strategic planning: Analyze wildfire data and trends to lead development and inform provincial wildfire prevention strategies, business rules, standard operating procedures, and training programs.
•    Fire Permit Program: Serve as the provincial specialist and lead in the ongoing development and operation of Alberta’s fire permit program.
•    Fire Ban System: Oversee the Alberta Fire Ban system, working closely with stakeholders to implement a variety of advisories, restrictions, bans and closures as Fire Control Orders.
•    Cost Recovery: Supports the recovery of costs for human-caused wildfires, working closely with department staff to ensure the collection fire suppression costs.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard: 
•    University graduation in a field related to the position assignment such as Science, Forestry, Environmental Science or Natural Resource Compliance plus 6 years related experience.

 

Equivalency
•    A related two-year diploma plus 8 years related experience. 
•    Related education considered in lieu of experience based on one year of education for one year of experience.

 

Additional Requirement:
•    Eligibility to hold a Forestry Peace Officer appointment would be considered an asset.

 

Assets:
•    Membership or eligibility for membership with the Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals is preferred.
•    Knowledge of wildfire, forest management, and forest health programs, legislation, policy, and regulations.
•    In-depth understanding of wildfire suppression methods, cause, behavior, prevention principles, and techniques.
•    Familiarity with provincial legislation related to forestry, environmental protection, and public lands management.
•    Experience in natural resource and wildfire management.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role, with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.

 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders. 

 

Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
